I was out riding in the Goldbar/Index area this past Sunday. I typically
ride really tight trails in the woods, which kind of fits my trials mind
set. The guy I was riding with has a new DRZ400 with a long-distance gas
tank, so it's not the best machine for doing that sort of work.

He had a couple maps and a GPS on the handle bars, so we rode some of the
jeep trials. I typically avoid them because the "trails" are like mine
fields. And in fact they were. I think I heard someone refer to them as
tank traps, and after seeing them I immediately understood why. There was no
going through some of these lakes, so we had to take to the woods to jump
logs and fight through swamps and trees and moss-covered boulders. Towards
the end of the trail there was a good sized rock climb, and then where the
woods opened up, we were treated to a spectacular view overlooking index:

I am holding onto that branch because one false move and I'd be in a 2000
foot free-fall to the valley floor. Despite the hard work getting there, it
sure was worth it.

You wouldn't catch me standing there. Looks like you have a loose grip on
that branch, you must not be too scared.

Here's a view from the seat of the DRZ:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://128.95.90.77/images/Whoa_Long_Drop.jpg" target="_blank">http://128.95.90.77/images/Whoa_Long_Drop.jpg</a>

BTW, I was just using the branch as a security blanket. Had I actually
needed it, it would have snapped right off in my hand. I am pretty
comfortable with heights -- so long as it isn't windy.

Index, Washington -- just off of Highway 2 -- about 50 miles northeast of
Seattle.

there are a couple of ways to get around that stuff and make it to the same
spot...one of them involves a semi-nice trail.
if you want a nice view, place to cool off, and challenging ride; then take
the trail out towards wallace falls and on to the end of the trail.
if you have a really trials mind; then once you get to the river...cross it
and climb the cliff up to the old road that continues on to wallace lake.
at least the map says it does! i've never been past the river.
