How bad an idea is this? My alternative is inside a crappy old shack
with some holes in the roof. I think the shack is somewhat animal
infested, and I'm afraid of critters getting in there. I've heard
lots of stories about mice getting into the smallest places and
wrecking stuff.
I have a good cover for it, but it leaves the bottom open, of
course. Any suggestions? Oh, I live in Boston, MA, so we will get
snow. If it's anything like last year we will get a lot of snow.

Thanks,
Jeff

Put it in the shed, and put the cover on it. Set some rat bait.
Check it from time to time.

Pretty bad. If this is a new bike, or otherwise "non-disposable", you
may want to consider public storage. It may cost you, but storing a
bike outside may be the surest way to destroy it, depending on your
geographical location.

Good Luck,

Igor.

Perhaps add some moth crystals (para-dichlorobenzene.) I hear that
the smell deters rodents and others who might like your bike.

you are so lucky you have that shed. I guess I didn't think too much about
winter and how bad it might be for a new bike. I cant put any kind of shed
out back
I guess the only thing I can use is a cover. right now my rule is no riding
when below freezing.
I don't want to hit any black ice. if weather is below freezing for a while
I guess all I can do
is make sure I start it once a week long enough to dry up any moisture on
the bike
other than I don't know. o well.

Cycleshelters are awesome. I would buy one of these and put it in
your shed as well. Covers your whole bike, underneath too.

C'mon guys. I haven't had access to a garage since I left home in 1969. All
my vehicles live outdoors all year. If I'm not planning to use them for a
few months, I pull the battery so I cna charge it up now and then.

The bikes get polytarps; the pickup can fend for itself. Given the
concentration of cats in the neighborhood, any mammals smaller than a deer
don't have a chance.

Beardog, I like your posts but I gotta say something about
the WD40 comment:

D O N ' T U S E I T !!!!

WD40 is nothing more than kerosene and will wash
off any real lube that present, no matter where it
gets sprayed.

For putting long term protection on surfaces that might
rust, LPS-3 is the cat's ass. It can be purchased in
small spray cans, or in one gallon jugs.

Check Aerostich. They have some neat unwired alarms for under $100.

Springfield, MA here.

Last winter my brother kept his bike outdoors and underneath a large
tarp. Then again, he did ride it to work almost every day through the
winter...

I'm lucky that I have a 1000sq/ft shop, plus my own garage to store this
year Smile
