Is it possible to buy pikey NGK plugs? The front plug died a while back so
two shiny new NGK BP7ES plugs were purchased from ebay and now the front one
has died again just a couple of hundred miles on. The plug fires with a weak
spark outside the cylinder but bugger all inside, and it failed quickly
too - started popping yesterday morning then failed completely.
Bad luck, pikey plugs, or something sinister going on within the HT circuit?
I've bought some Champion equivalents now to see if they last.

I suppose it is just possible that cheapo ebay plugs may be
counterfeit. Try a new NGK from a reputable source.
Or the spark could be weak for another reason. If you had worked on
SOIBs with CDI (Morini & Gilera) you would be familiar with the works
OK for a while on a brand new plug syndrome.
If a 'good' new NGK still "fails", check caps, leads, coils, timing
sender, etc.
On my one Morini which definitely has a sub optimal charging coil in
the stator (resistance half what it should be) new EV plugs and brand
new caps have helped a lot.

Plugs usually die for a reason.
Check the gap.
What colour is the insulator, if it looks black you have a problem,
carbon soot is shorting out the plug. If the engine is running correctly
the insulator should be light brown. If the mixture is too weak the insulator
will be a white-ish colour.
Black can be the harder one to diagnose, the soot is caused by incomplete
combustion which can be caused by rich mixture, insuficcient compression,
intermittent spark etc. >> Stay informed about: On the untimely demise of NGK spark plugs |

Because it was more convenient to buy them there and then and have them
delivered first class, whereas going to a dealer meant going out of my way
and I'd have had to wait a couple of days before I could get there anyway.
Some things which seem incredulous often have a simple explanation. Sorry I
wasn't more clear on the reasons behind my FFS purchase.

I always use this lot for that reason (particularly as I usually want
the rarer EVX derivative). They also supply caps and lead. Very
knowledgeable and informative plus rapid service.

Noted, ta. That reminds me - I must have a look to see if the HT leads can
be removed from the coils. Knowing my luck they'll be built-in!

Fake plugs have been around for years, along with an icredible range of
other fake motor parts. Compressed cardboard brake pads? Yep.

....if the spark plug is loose and the bike caned until it pre-ignites
and seizes, the entire nose will be covered in oil, the side electrode
shortened and rounded with a blob of alloy stuck to it and it will
have curled in to short against the centre electrode.

So I've read. Seems a lot of trouble to go to, making dodgy splugs. You'd
think if a company had the manufacturing capabilities to make a decent copy
of a genuine NGK they might as well make 'em properly.
