Took this weekend off to go to the Caprock Enduro in Texas. The race was
postponed due to wet conditions and the TSCEC informed everyone on Friday so
I didn't have to drive from Colorado to Texas to find out. Locally was the
first trials event of the year also. So I loaded up that bike instead.

Met a bunch of great people, rode with a couple of friends that it was
their first one too, and just had an all around good time.

The course was made up of 10 test sections, all pretty close to the
parking area. We had to go through the loop 3 times. I made some stupid
mistakes and still don't fully understand the rules but I have a better
grasp of them now than I did at the start of the day.

To much fun!!

Sounds like you found a trials bike? I thought rmd rules stated you
must announce all bike purchases within 72 hours!!!

Dang, so you made it to the one near "bluffs" east of Colo springs? it
would been 350 miles, for me to go to it, and I almost went. I decided Ill
wait, it would been 4 weekends in a row to compete. But yet closest Colo
trails for me to goto, I shoulda went, Dang. Well you did buy a bike at
least I notice. Oh well, I got other maintenence done I guess....

From what I understand, here are the rules:

1) Don't put your foot down.

That's it.

Oh yeah, and...

2) Wait for your turn.

Yep.

I ended up with an 04 GasGas 300 Pro. It has some dings on it but I got
it for a pretty decent price.

The event was just East of Colorado Springs.

My stupid mistakes are just learning ones. I was a little more creative
with one line than I should have been and got a 5 in a section, coloring
outside the lines thing. Then put a foot down a couple of times and adjusted
before taking off giving me a 2 instead of a 1. I ended up 1st beginner,
there were only 2 of us but would have gotten 2nd Novice. Next time novice
class.

I'm looking forward to my next, not gonna rush out to everyone but if I
have a free weekend and it's close I'll show up, hell same day sign up was
only $20. That's pretty sweet.

Study these videos first.
http://www.trials-online.com/the-videos.php
I know. These are bicycleTrials, but, most of the techniques
are the same.
Then maybe order the beginners Trials Video.
http://www.itstrials.com/pages/its_basic_dvd.html
Or I can loan you mine. It is a very basic training video. Geared
towards children at first. Then on to more advanced novice and
sportsman
level skills.

And while you are waiting for your video. Read and practice
the basics from this:
http://www.geocities.com/chapter11vintageracing/Trials_Coaching_Manual.html
Or, (same info diff web page)
http://home.wanadoo.nl/menk/_tri/trial_eng.html

Some more links from the TTC Trials Training Center in Tenn.
http://www.trialstrainingcenter.com/html/how_to_ride.html

Ryan Young also puts out a great training video.

Some of the rules for Observed Trials change from club to club and
country

American rules sometime do not follow the FIM European rules. At
least
for a few years till we catch up...or wait the the Europeans change
the
rules back.

Yeah, you can read just so much but at some point you just have to get out
there and do it to get the hang of how things work. Sounds like you had a
good time.

BTW, I'm lousy at taking tests too...(haha)

You don't. That's why trials riders make good enduro riders.

Great choice if I say so myself (I have an '03)
This ling might be of some interest http://www.gasgasmuseum.com/

Also http://TrialsPartsUsa.com is a link to Rising Sun Imports.
I believe they are the GasGas importer for the US. I have
ordered parts from them and they are very knowledgeable. One of the guy
answering the phone is the dude on the maintenance DVD that should have come
with your bike. (If not I can make you a copy)

I searched and could not find a close look of that Cagiva engine. Does
it have a powervalve? I'd like to compare with Agrale bikes, which had
Cagiva engines as well, with no exhaust valves, but it is liquid
cooled, have only one big radiator on the right side, prone to
boiling, if cooling system is not 100% perfect.... Great bikes with
parts that are very hard to find... I had a 94 200cc for a very short
time, a friend had a 89 125cc with the 200cc cylinder, we had lots of
fun on those bikes.
