In keeping with the anti-debt theme, there's enough cash on the bar to cover
the drink of your choosing....
From some digging I've done on the wild world web I can see that in the past
there are/have been at least three IRLs within an easily workable distance
for me.
I'm in the north-middle-east of Massachusetts a couple towns form the NH
border. Nearby routes are 2, 190 south to Worcester, 495S to the Cape and
north to the beaches, NH Rte3 to points middle north of New England and VT.
I spend a lot of my non-commuting ride time going west on 2 toward North
Adams, MA, and/or northwest on 119/123/124/31/101 toward Keene, NH, because
I like the sparse traffic and nice scenery. I went out for a ride one day
and found myself at the junction of 119 and 91 near Brattleboro, VT. I still
had lots of time left in the day so I made the run up 91 to White River
Junction and then back on 89 through the Nashua area, just for shits and
giggles. Had a blast just enjoying the 65-70MPH ride. Lost all consciousness
toward the significance of time and returned home some 6 hours later, a bit
exhausted, but with that smile that only a biker can smile when bones are
aching and ears are ringing.
An 8 hour day - 6 hour ride one way is no problem to spend an evening
drinking and a morning sleeping off any overindulgences, although admittedly
I have no real experience at packing my bike for an overnight trip, but I'm
willing to give it a go and suffer any stoopidities. A couple hours out and
a couple hours back for a lunch and a couple of beers is also simply lovely.
That puts the CT Vermort, and the pig roast in Halifax, MA in the "there and
back in a day" category, and the VT Vermort in the "spend the night and get
hammered category". Since I spent the summer of '79 living in Stowe, VT and
haven't been back much since, I'd really enjoy touring the area for a couple
of days on the bike, and having a place to rest my head, and share the joy
of it. I remember the roads well (not so much which ones go where, but more
what they are like), and imagine that riding them on a sickle is literally
hog heaven.
Question is, who is the keeper of the schedules for these events, and are
they open to all? I'm thinking it's time to make a few trips out of the
backyard and meet some folks, but I need to plan accordingly, starting
pretty soon.
Tanks mang...

The events in your area are a little different than things like the Smiley's
IRL, Eddie's B-Day or MISFIT. They tend to be at people's homes, and while
I can't speak for any of the fine hosts, I suspect they'd be more
comfortable welcoming you if at least one person they know said that they've
met you. That's not to say that regular posters that have never been to an
IRL haven't shown up and were welcome with open arms. I contacted the host
of the Vermort IRL before hand and asked if I could show up, I got the OK
but I've also met some regulars prior to that. It's also a good idea to
contact the hosts ahead of time since most of them have to plan out food and
booze and like to know how many guests to expect. Unfortunately it looks
like I might be stuck riding in circles around the peninsula for the next
few years with no chance for an IRL anytime soon.
Now, having said that you should meet someone, you should avoid forming an
opinion on the group based on that meeting, aside from us being relatively
friendly. We're all very different people, and at first glance you may not
see many similarities between, say...PhilB, SteveT and Allen-1 (especially
if Steve shows up on the Stella from Hell). Be open minded, have fun, get
out there and say hi to someone and then get to an IRL.

Didn't you just get that gas tank that solved the sporting lack of gas
stations across the frozen tundra? Waddaya mean "no chance...anytime
soon"? And how do you ride circles around a peninsula - that is the
tell-tale characteristic of an island, eh?

No such luck. I *may* be heading back to one of them teaching places in
fall to upgrde my edimication, pending acceptance, funds, company support.
That and work will take up all my time for the next 2+ years. I'm still
planning on running up to Goose Bay next year, but aside from that I'll have
to stay put.

When I get to the point where 3000 miles one way is an easily workable
distance, I'll be sure to ping you. Better be cold beer when I get there.

Now that makes you sound like them folks that say "you rode all the
way". A 3000 mile ride is just several 400/600/?00 strung together with beer
stops & IRL meets in between............8^) At least that's how we do it.......
"One way's" & "Round trips" are for airlines, not motorcycles.

Whew, and here I thought I was going to have to start doing iron butt rides
just to get into shape.
400 miles for a beer, a samwich, and a nap sounds good to me. <sfsf>
I can't help but think if I get a nice big windshield on the FXR, and some
quiet(er) pipes, I could get at least another couple hundred miles with just
a few additional butt breaks.
My brother traded the shield for the performance pipes when he bought the
bike new from the local dealer. That definitely would not have been a choice
I'd make. It's one of the reasons I want to get out and meet some local
folks. Not just to share a meal and a laugh, but to learn where to get parts
for older bikes, and have some company going to get 'em.

Well, I can guarantee the beer & the samwich, but not so sure about the
nap. We're an active group! Take a look across the street at "No Party too
Far".................8^)
