Post subject: Best time to sell or trade in
Archived from groups: aus>motorcycles (more info?)

My wife suggested I upgrade my bike, so obviously I am in a hurry. I
have double-checked and she really does believe I should get something
newer. I am thinking of getting a CB600F Hornet or similar. My
current bike, which you might have guessed is a Honda VTR 250 has 39K
on the clock and the next service is due at 42K. I'm inclined to
trade-in if the dealer will take it (I'm guessing they will).

The question is can you put these in order of preference for
saleability/trade in value, most desirable first:

1. 40K on the clock.
2. 42K but not serviced.
3. 44K serviced and any work required done.

Is the trade-in value based ONLY on the year/Kms? In that case a
black/red book would confirm it's 1, 2, 3. I think it's 1, 2, 3: you
get exactly what it's worth, so just trade up when you can.

On the other hand, if the service is a factor (I wouldn't want to buy
something with a service due), then it could be 3, 1, 2. But... if I
get rid of it at 44K, potential buyer might think I had it serviced
and found something out and decided to get shot of it. Then again...
this is starting to look like a private sale already.

Can someone give me some independent (constructive) input?

Thanks

Thanks, Dale. I haven't traded in anything myself before now (private
sales only) but, from the stories I've heard, you have confirmed my
fears. It's not SO bad as long as you don't have any expectations.
If you think it's worth $x however, take $y and weep!

My experience with trading in any vehicle, car or bike, is that yes they
look at the average kms for that make and model and compare the amount yours
has done. They then look over the bike and see what parts need replacing.
Tyres that to you or me look like they are close to new, a dealer will look
at and say.... "can't sell it like that, to close to the wear indicators so
we have to put new tyres on it".

"Chain looks a little loose, will have to replace them so we can sell it on"

"Rego will be due soon"

And so on. And for each item they will deduct the retail price of parts and
labour, but of course they won't be paying retail price themselves.

They are in the business to make a quid after all, so they won't do you many
favours. The main advantage to trading in a bike is to get rid of it and not
have the hassle of selling it privately.

Cheers,
Dale.

Trade ins are for lazy people with cash to throw away.
I got a $800 trade in for my GPX250.
Ok it was 10 years old, it had new tires, brakes and 6 months rego.
Just be ready for disappointment. There are in business to make money.
If your worried about the difference a couple of K on the clock or a service
will make to the trade in price I think you should sell privately.
It was suggested if I sold my GPX privately I could have got around $2000
or more but....

Nice try Doug Cox but not me. Swingers party sounds interesting though. I
have taken steps to avoid any confusion between him and myself in the
future.

Do you mean a new Hornet, as in the ones that haven't arrived yet?

AFAI remember, the 600 Hornets hit the Oz market before the VTR 250's,
and stopped coming in while the VTR 250 was a current model.

Oh they certainly will take the bike, but how much or little they'll
give you is the problem. Neutral

Trading it in, you get exactly what the trader decides to give you,
nothing at all to do with what it may be worth.

BTW, if you are trading a bike against a used bike, and the dealer
offers you anything like the worth of your bike, panic...there is
probably something horrendously wrong with the bike you are trying to buy.

Private sale is a better way to go.

Another alternative is to keep the VTR250, and then get something else,
as well.

Trust me on this, depending on your use of the motorcycle, it is
eminently possible for having two bikes to actually be practical.

Up until yesterday, I owned a Hornet 600. I got it new in 1998.
I loved it, it was a great bike, but, it was too expensive to be used as
a commuter bike. I actually went out and bought a cheap commuter bike
because of the expense of running the Hornet in tyres and fuel.

Actually, yes.

I was rather disappointed that John's DNA didn't fit me.

BTW, updates....

The Hornet was delivered to it's new home yesterday, and the Triumph
Street Triple was collected today.

Angie also seems to have revised my bike-limit in a downward direction.

I think I'd need to sell the Z50, and also find a home for the RZ250,
before I'm likely to be in a position to buy anything more.

The Hornet used sizes of tyres which didn't give the option of
"touring", they were either stick, very sticky or ludicrously stick, and
also over $500 a pair.

A petrol tank and fuel range that makes you have to fill up every third
day, doesn't work well with the Sydney business of Mondays and Tuesdays
being cheap(er) petrol prices.

Someone who commutes by bike, and has a commuter bike already should
atleast consider keeping the commuter bike, if/when they buy something
bigger.

Commuter bikes are called that 'cos they are designed to do that job.

Yes, I know you _can_ commute on a big bike but it isn't always the best
solution.
