The missus and I are thinking of going to England at the end of May (for our
anniversary) and would like to hire a bike each for a couple weeks. Since it
would be convenient we would like to go to Silverstone. Has anyone done
something similar? Would love to hear of anything we should be aware of from
someone who has made the trek. We are looking at riding mostly around
Britain with a two day / overnight stay in Paris. Other than that the plan
was to stay out of the cities as much as possible tour the country side and
stay in pubs at night.

Any useful advice is much appreciated.

Did a similar thing about a year and a half ago. Some random thoughts:

Going to a SBK race in the UK is reccomended. They love that stuff
there Wink I went to Brands Hatch SBK and it was the best bike race I've
been to. Even better than Valencia MotoGP a couple of months ago!

Try to avoid riding too much in Britian; it rains a helluva lot and
there is a lot of traffic. Everywhere.

Same goes for Europe in summer, too. Heaps of traffic all over the
place. There's not really much in the way of "country towns" as we know
them; Europe is all small cities which big cities being the exception.
The upshot of this is, of course, that the roads between them are small
and busy.

Which brings up the other point, in summer especially, book your
accomodation ahead. The place is always packed with tourists, France
doubly-especially!

All told, next time I want to ride bikes in Europe, I will hire one in
the (Swiss, Austrian, Italian) alps and tour only the alps. And I'll do
it in Spring rather than summer. The rest of Europe is not really worth
riding through, IMO.

Keep an eye for the English BIKE magazine, they regularly recommend
less travelled roads, and occasionally put out compendiums of their
recommended rides. As a bonus I found English drivers to be more
motorcycle aware and friendly than Australian drivers. Lane splitting
seems to be the norm and car drivers usually gave room. There are lots
of good B roads to be found, and I found it easy enough to keep away
from the motorways. For accommodation I found youth hostels to be good
value.

Other than that, BASTARD!

Cheers, and have a good ride,

Bill

Check out the hire bike prices then go raise a mortgage. They are
bloody expensive. Better to stay longer and take your own bike. Do the
Superbike round at Silverstone and you absolutely must go to the Isle
of Man TT races at the beginning of June and you could also fit in the
Dutch TT on the last Saturday in June.

Then there's the North West 200 in Northern Ireland on Sat 13 May -
180,000 spectators every year - it's sensational racing!

Lets face it once you've paid your airfares you may as well stay
longer and get your moneys worth.

Anyone here know someone who ships container loads of Australian owned
bikes to the UK at the end of March to arrive early May??? ;-}}

Kind regards

Had considered going to Isle of Man. Really though the trip is more for site
seeing (wife's family estate and the like) more than to catch the races.
Unfortunately I think dumping the children on the rellies for more than 2
weeks might be pushing it just a little, so staying longer wont be possible.
If we were going longer I would definitely consider taking our bikes as no
one seems to hire ZZR's (although it could be a good chance to sample the ER
6 F) The missus would feel more comfortable on something she already knows.

Thanks anyway Dave.

Wow, that is cheap for the UK. I'd grab that deal because I can't
match it.

Grab it while they still have availability.

There's no way I could get two bikes there and back for less than
that.

Kind regards
