My Toro CCR-2000 (~10 yrs old) did something quite uncharacteristic today
when we laid into The Snow. Got it out of the barn Friday night... It had
been put away fully drained with WD-40 sprayed inside the cylinder. Added
fresh premix at the recommended 50:1 Sat am. It started nicely first pull
and I ran it for a couple of minutes and then stored it to start working
on the tractor-mounted snow blower. Today, I started it and pushed it into
the snow.. after maybe 1 minute, it backfired with noticeable flame and
quit. Feels like normal compression when I pull it thru the cycle but not
a hint of starting. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Sounds like maybe it sheared the woodruff key holding the flywheel in
place on the crank. Makes for a very radical change in timing. Happens
when the motor tries to slow down when the flywheel doesn't want to
yet. Were you pushing it into a pretty good snowbank?
Or maybe it's something else.

The load on the blower was minimal at the time... 2" of fluffy stuff. It's
a starting point though... I'll see if I can check it out. Thanks Tim.

did ya check for spark?? it doesn't take much to make
2 stroke run (gas, air & spark). a couple of weeks ago
I did my last cut of the year with the 50's lawn boy...
it didn't want to run with out the choke on ??
So I looked at the carb and noticed the air filter was
missing as in a mouse or something made off with it?
So I ripped a hunk off of a foam paint brush & stuffed
it in the carb and cut the grass.

Not in the midst of combat. I mobilized my tank division as soon as the
flame throwers came out. It'll get checked along with other basics before
I decide to send it off to service.

It was a decent size large flame out the exhaust... the sound of a .45
going off near my knees... and my underwear getting all the black goei...
