This one has a seat? I like the speedo location, that's where I'd
have it for when I try a front-wheelie and forget to hold on.

Most trial bikes used to have what can be called a seat. It just schrank
over the years.
Looks like eraly/mid 90's is when they finally lost any resemblance of
one:

<http://usmontesa.com/html/history_gallery.html>

I'm not sure what a modern competition looks like, but back in the
late 70's, they had to do a loop with multiple zones. The zones is where
you lose points for putting your foot down. But you only had so
much time to do the loop. So these guys really hauled between zones.
The trial competitions around my home town let the public ride the loop
during the competition. I had a Honda XL125 at the time and I couldn't
keep up with the competitors.

Modern competitions sound very much like what you described with the
exception of allowing spectators on the loop.

Yea but I still can't sit on it much. I have a '76 348 Cota.
Pretty similar with less rear suspension travel, and AHRMA legal
which this one isn't. 349s supposed to have a monster motor
while the 348 is a little softer.

I can sit down for 3-4x longer than on a modern bike.. that's
30 or 40 seconds instead of 10.

Dig those high bars. Thats what mine needs, the old bikes
have bar mounts lower and footpegs higher and with modern bars
I feel like Quasimodo hunched over on mine.

They all did that for years. In civilised countries
they run trials loops on the public roads.
Sammy Miller put his speedo on the engine
case on his super light Ariel 500s so the cable would
be shorter and lighter.

That is OLD school...

However Yamaha does this nowdays...
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6718&item=4515368569&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW" target="_blank">http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6718...em=4515</a>

it is a perfectly "comepetition" ready bike with an optional seat & tank...
see these bikes in action here, in some training videos...

That was one of the first things I thought, brutal motor!
Kinda funky aggressive stance too.

Yeh, I saw that, and they're pulled-back pretty good.

Maybe I should just put come CR-Hi bend Renthals on mine...tall, lotta
sweep...

How light is "super-light" when it's an Ariel?

That's like Douglas-Dragonfly Light?

If you "could stay on," or if you could keep from jumping to safety?
Seatbelts? No atheists in foxholes...

That's pretty neat for TST, they also make a more "trials" type Scorpa
I think.

Thanks for the link! My photo sequence would not go well, following
this point:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.trialstrainingcenter.com/assets/images/db_images/db_IMG_11341.jpg" target="_blank">http://www.trialstrainingcenter.com/assets/images/db_images/db_IMG_11341.jpg</a>

Not like that guy's...or the drop-off's, I have too much weight up
high and forward over the front wheel. And a death-grip on the
brakes.
I could maybe do the drop-off with a set of bars like ape-hangers,
pulled back... Wink

So, I'm thinkin' a trip for 2 out the TTC might make a nice anniversary
gift.
For Eric, of course.

Why..Yes it would make an awsome aniversary present for Eric.
Another option..and a whole bunch closer to ya'all would be
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.motoventures.com/" target="_blank">http://www.motoventures.com/</a> They also do Trials training classes
along with enduro and trail riding tours.
Sometimes they have a celebrity guest instructor or two at hand.
Not to drop names, but, I've heard that a certain multi-time-national
trials champion has been known to give instruction. =:^)
TTC though, is THE benchmark for Trials education here in the U.S.
Enjoy and post us a class report.
