Awhile back, MX Tuner mentioned the holy grail of tires, one that lasts
all season, bites as well in mud as sand and hard packed clay, mounts
itself, and costs under $40.
I can't seem to find it in the Dennis Kirk catalog.
So, what out there is almost as good? I'm still happy with the Michelin
S12 rear/M12 front I'm running, but I don't do much motocross, and I'm a
lot easier on tires than other members of my family.
My 14 year old, OTOH, is going through rear tires like a knife through
mustard. Dunlop 756 was OK, then a Michelin Starcross MS2, better but he
tore it up in 4 days on some of the hard packed tracks he rides. Anyone
tried a Starcross MH2? What about Bridgestone, or Pirelli/Metzeler?
Heck, I'm willing to try Maxxis and Cheng Shin, even. He favors
motocross, rides tracks that vary from groomed soft clay to ungroomed
hardpack and sand, as well as trails that vary from mud to hardpack to
rock to sand.

Tuner lies. You have to get the tire plated at Gorr's first....
I've heard good things about the Kenda Millville being an acceptable
less pricy substitute for the Michelins. I haven't tried one yet.

Only the Maxxis. That's the only way to make them last.

I haven't tried the Kenda. The Michelin MH2 wears extremely well, even
on 450 four strokes.

My fav is the IRC VE-33 for the same reasons. I ran an M5B on my XR400 and
it was real "nervous" feeling on decomposed granite soils and hardpack. I
think it was from the wide spacing between the knobs. On loose stuff
though, you can't beat the M5B.
The IRC VE-33 rear combined with the VE-35F front is excellent at doing a
good job on most all surfaces and wears very well on the rocks. The tall
knob profile makes it OK for sand 'n stuff like that.

Yeah, that's why I go with the 5.10x18 on my XR ... wish they made a 5.10x19
for the CRF instead of the 110/90X19.

I tried a Kenda Millville rear and even though it wore well it was horrible
traction. I was not happy with it.
I have a set of MH2's on there now and am VERY happy. It works well on hard
pack, really well in softer stuff and great in the mud too.
I have a set of MS2's already on a set of rims ready to go on for a really
wet mudslop but the way the MH2's are working I'll probably just use the
MS2's as a interim tire while getting MH2 replacements.

For deep sandand mud, I like the S-12 the best.
I like them best, as long as wet rocks are not involved.
For use in the rocks (especially when wet and slick) and intermediate
terrain, and still decent control and traction on the sand and mud, I
like the Kenda Millville front, mated to a Bridgestone M-402 rear.
12 psi front in the rocks, 11 in the mud.
rear - 11.5 in the rocks, and 10 in the sand.
These seem to wear a long time also.

A buddy in Ohio has found something close. That would be four of the
756s he buys from a local pro-am rider after one race on them for
eight to 10 bucks a pop.

That would work. Especially if they were 756RRs. I wouldn't mind finding
a connection like that. Not to mention some 2 hour old fenders and
shrouds, etc.

I've got a couple rides on a set of Millvilles... pretty good I guess.
I'm probalby not the best judge of tires due to my lack of ability.
But I haven't seen amy great differece from the S-12s I was running.
They may end up wearing longer though. Not sure yet.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: The search for Tuner's tire |
