there were a few guys walking around La Honda two weekends ago at the
Ducati Day event, wearing these yellow t-shirts which said something
like "scientology minister".

so what's up with that? what's their connection to motorcycles?

Their connection to motorcycles is fellow Scientologist "Doc" Wong. Were
they hyper-excited?

Pretty much the same connection they have to anything else: they'll troll
*anywhere* looking for new suckers, er, converts.

I once attended a technical lecture -for which I had paid good money- that
was put on by a guy who turned out to be a Scientologist. He spent the last
ten minutes of the hour *we'd* paid for by telling us why we should sign up
with his army of mindless zombies.

He then made the tactical error of asking each of us to critique his
presentation. You can guess what everybody told him. It hurt his feelings.

He then claimed that he was only prostheletizing us for our own good, and
that he wouldn't be being honest if he didn't "help us along" as much as he
possibly could.

Here there be dragons.

Brainzzz....Scientologists need brainzzz....

Why hasn't Keith Code won races, since Scientology has helped him so much?

Why hasn't the new Dianetics Nascar driver become first tier if
Scientology helped him so much?

Results. Look at the results, not the testimonials! If these guys claim
that Scientology has helped them in their endeavors, WHY AREN'T THEY
WINNING?

they were really hustling and bustling around, but they seemed real
grim-faced. this was a real contrast to all the happy people at the
event. they really stood out as sour pusses.

Oh phffft...

I have no idea what they respective religions of the winning racing
riders and drivers are, but say they were Jewish, or Buddish... Does
that mean we should all convert?

Our fine Mr. Bush is a born-again. He wins well enough to stick
around, apparently. Should we all become Christian?

Someone's always going to be winning, and they'll always have a
religion. But for some reason, I'm driven to make spiritual choices
based on something other than the track record of the most recognized
participants.

And really, is this an arguement you want to be making? While I can't,
I'm sure someone out there can rattle off a list of a whole bunch of
"successful" Scientologists.

Finally, I'd just like to state that I personally don't really care how
someone "ranks" so long as they're happy in their lot. Have you ever
met a janitor who is really content with their life? It's kind of an
eye-opening experience.

I'm not myself a follower of Scientology, and there certainly seem to
be major problems with it. Much more serious and interesting ones than
it's disciples not winning races, frankly.

Um. Motorcycles are cool. I've got a yellow one. On topic. Yah.

Indeed I've heard some of the same. But should these "results" be
measured in winning races, is what I'm wondering?

This brings up a fairly interesting point... If you look at results as
a life-satisfaction metric rather than a success-at-an-activity metric,
could you concider some of these folks successful, albeit kind of
poisonous to others around them and certainly annoying?

Not that all of them would be successful under that meaning, but some,
I would think.

Personally, I like to think that just because I find something abrasive
doesn't make it bad for everyone on all counts.

(NOTE: I am not trying to argue that Scientology is good, or that it
works for most people. I just find it hard to beleive that it's bad
for everyone, which seems a common conjecture.)

That's got me wondering... What major groups exist in our society who
are entirely against moral relativism and who's practices actually bear
that out?

Moral relativism seems a real point of commonality these days.

Oh, have faith in our well trained customs agents.

If for no other reason, it's more fun to watch an optimist be
disapointed than a pessimist be vindicated.

Of course, we may both be right. It may simply be screened by a
paranoid obsessive who knows exactly what it is, but secretly suspects
Aprilia is building an atomic motorcycle.

Scientology - A Question of Faith

Did a mother's belief in Scientology contribute to her brutal murder?
Peter Van Sant examines a March 2003 murder that doctors say might never
have occurred if Jeremy Perkins, a 28-year-old paranoid schizophrenic,
had received proper treatment to control his psychotic delusions -
delusions which made him believe his mother, Elli, was evil. The family
desperately wanted to help their son, but they followed the principles
of Scientology, a religion which strongly opposes psychiatric treatment.
Elli Perkins was stabbed more than 70 times by her mentally ill son.
