I have some sad news. My son Barry was working on his car today, and
was crushed when the jack collapsed.
Here's a link to a picture of us after a day of picking up motorcycles
at Loudon. He's the one with the beard.
http://www.broadsquad.org/images/benefit/0104-020-s.jpg
He was a member of the U.S. Marshalls.
http://www.usmarshalls.org/
From the time he was big enough to reach the pegs, he loved going for
rides on the back of my bike. He enjoyed most anything to do with
motorized wheels. How could he help himself, his middle name was
Cuda. After highschool he got further schooling to become a certified
mechanic.
I'm posting this as a reminder to others. I know this is a motorcycle
group, but most of us have cars, and many of us work on them. He had
put a board behind the wheels so the car couldn't roll. Why he didn't
use the jack stands that were five feet from the car I'll never know.

wow Bruce I really don't know what to say - except I am sorry
for how you must be feeling. I don't know if you are religious or not
but I will say a little prayer for him tonight
and for you.
I am truly sorry

Bruce,
My heartfelt sympathies go out to you and your family. Being a father
myself, I can't even imagine the pain you must be feeling. Stay strong and
know that you have the thoughts and prayers of my family.

Some cities have support groups for parents who have lost
children to share and discuss their grief. That, along with
time can help.
I'm guilty of getting under my vehicle for a brief inspection
with only the hydraulic floor jack supporting it, and I wouldn't
be surprised if many others are, too. What sort of jack was he
using?
My condolences,
Henry

It was the OEM scissors jack that came with his Buick. He had jacked
up the front on the passenger's side and removed the wheel for access
to the front of the transverse engine. He was going to change the
timing chain and oil. Near as I can tell he had a wrench on the oil
drain plug. When he pulled on it the car rocked just enough to shift
more weight to one side of the jack. The jack didn't tip over, it
folded out sideways.
He has always used jack stands in the past. I can only assume that he
was going to set them up while the oil was draining, before he got to
the more serious wrenching.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: sad news |

Bruce,
I'm so sorry. All I can offer is an echo of what Henry wrote: I've
stared at jackstands less that 3 feet away that I should have been using
many times. Maybe you've saved me a world of hurt, or worse.
