Hi
Can anyone tell me how long I should run in a KMX125 2 stroke after a top
end re-build? The barrel was re-sleeved (if that is the right term) and new
piston and top end bearing put in.
Also, what form should the running in take? Is it just a case of keeping the
revs low? Does this mean getting into the highest gear possible should be
the aim, because surely trundling up hills in 6th would be labouring the
engine too?
And is the running in measured in miles or hours?

A tank or two of petrol should see it more than done.

Feel free to be a bit more enthusiastic than that though. A bit of
mixed load riding with you keeping away from full throttle for as long
as your attention span will allow is how most people seem to do it.

Seconds usually. Miles/hours, same thing really once you do some simple
sums.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember BGN <nickmooney RemoveThis @spamcop.net> saying

Cool. 2 tanks have sent me 100 miles in around 5 hours, which says more
about the terrain than the bike.

So you empty one or two tanks in seconds? You blokes are always boasting.
Freud had a lot to say about that.
And I would love to be your bank manager if your simple sums involve
confusing two completely different things. Einstein may well have proved
that time and distance are the same thing but he spelt his name wrong.
Twice.

Leave it ticking over on your drive for 20 minutes...

Some of us with good reason.

I'm a bloke, I can only think of one thing at a time.

As always opinions differ. I'd say 150 - 200 miles running-in for
pistons and cyls on any stroker. Be sure to warm up the engine
properly before subjecting it to any load, by blipping your
throttle for a few minutes but staying below about 6,000 rpm. On
the road accelerate gradually and keep revs fairly low as much as
practical but don't slave the engine especially on hills. Be
gentle moving both ways through the box going easy on the clutch.
After 75 -100 miles you can increase your self-imposed rev limit
by 1500 - 2000 rpm but do the mileage before you start redlining.
You'll be rewarded by more power / economy in the end.
