I was in the sandpits sunday, and this guy rides up on an Osaka 200
XR200 ripoff. It even said XR200R on the sidepanels! He offered me a
test ride.
Well, its a very light-duty bike, and although the engine is supposed
to be a honda clone, its got no low end or midrange compared to my
non-RFVC XR200.
The fellow said a buddy of his was considering importing them, get 'em
for $800, sell 'em for $1200-$1300. They can't be imported from China
direct, so they actually come through Europe.
So its an "European" bike made in china named after a Japanese city.
Scary thought- remember when Japanese stuff was junk, and how fast it
got good?
How long's it going to take for the chinese stuff to become good?

A while, I think. It might be the political climate, but China seems to be
slow to refine products. The USSR had the same problem. Products for
domestic consumption got the job done, but they were a little crude. Many
western companies have gotten good results in the PRC so it's not a lack of
talent. If the CPC can mind their own business things will go much faster.
This is nothing new. When Britain was on the cutting edge of the industrial
revolution, German products were considered junk. It didn't take the German
states long to catch on.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: I rode an OSAKA 200 (chinese knockoff) |

It could be awhile, but I work near the telecom sector, and there's
networking equip. companies in China that make stuff that almost
rivals cisco's stuff, if you leave off some of the more esoteric
features.
China's a funny place.

I was contacted by one of the Chinese dirt bike/crotch rocket
companies. If I would have bought a 40-foot container, I could have
gotten them for something like $180 per. In other words, if I sold
them for a grand, I might have made just enough on the whole boat to
cover the legal expenses for one of the dozen lawsuits resulting from
everything from stuck throttles to faulty brakes.

We have Hyosung's and Cheetah's here. My guess is that they're Korean made.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: I rode an OSAKA 200 (chinese knockoff) |

I remember a photo from some mag, maybe Wired, of laying fiber optic in
China. Must have been a hundred guys hiking along with the cable on their
shoulders. The parade disappeared over the next hill.
One of the moldmakers I worked with got an order for a mold from China.
Nothing special, but the prints specced some large threaded holes that
didn't make any sense. That's where they screwed the rods when they wanted
to change molds. The hell with a fork lift or mold table, just get a dozen
guys and trot off with it. Mold probably went 2000 lbs or so.
Of course, when you have that many people and everybody needs a job, labor
saving isn't a big priority. It's going to be a hell of a joke on all the
companies that a slobbering to get a slice of the Chinese consumer market
when China wakes up and shows them how to do it.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: I rode an OSAKA 200 (chinese knockoff) |

In terms of total feature set, quality, and reliability, I can agree
in general with your "no way" statement. For the functionality that
many customers want, at a price that Cisco can't be beat, Huawei is
proving to be pretty popular.
They're winning designs in Europe, and 3Com partnered with them
(pretty desperate, I know).

I rememeber when I was in Mexico working on the startup of a new plant... The
American Plant Manager wanted a watering system installed all the way around
the plant (3.4 mile loop) to keep the grass green. Now mind you, this is
Monterrey NL, in the middle of the desert. There is NO grass.
A couple days later a backhoe shows up and sits on the trailer for a day. Next
day the backhoe is pulled off the trailer and parked to the side of the lot.
Four men used hand shovels to dig the ditch for the watering system all the way
around the plant. The backhoe didn't even move.
They did get it done pretty quick (in about 2 weeks) and to this day the plant
has grass all the way around the plant.

IMO the time it takes it depends on us. Do you want Cheap or Good?
You can't have both.
1.) If you have people only willing to buy a $200 motorcycle you will
get a $200-built motorcycle, $0.30 part by $0.30 part, available at
Kragen.
2.) If you upgrade to a $2,000 motorcycle you either get:
A.) a $200 motorcycle-ripoff, a lot of expensive _looking_ BNG
disguising a $200 bike (see: Maytag Neptune - the $200 washer with
circuit board and other crap parts from China, sold as a $1500
washer).
Or
B.) a $2,000 motorcycle.

Why is it a scary thought ? Would it make a difference if we
exported the money to China instead of Japan ? If the US had a thriving
off road motorcycle manufacturing industry I could see being scared.
But as it is now, the only dirt bike made in the USA is only attracting
the big sprocket marginals like Deeney
In fact if what comes out of China is cheaper but more junky there might be
even more of an opportunity for after market parts since people would want
to fix up their cheap bike. (They'll probably end up spending more money
than buying a quality bike in the first place...)

China entering any market can have a large impact on that market. Not
now, but at some point. Take all the things the Japanese used to do
(still do, I'm sure) that were branded as unfair competitive
practices, lump that into a country where the conception of
rights/human rights is completely foreign.
