Post subject: Off road and ICBC (? for BC types)
Archived from groups: can>rec>motorcycles (more info?)

Hi Guys.

My current street bike is an '02 1200 Bandit, which I have a total blast
on. In Sept when all the holiday types are off the roads and the campsites
are vacant, we load the bikes onto a trailer and head for the interior for a
week or so, do some camping and cut loose on the totally unoccupied interior
secondary hwys. Big time fun.

Anyways, we thought it would be a trip to get a couple of dirt bikes also,
somehow expand the trailer, and do some off road exploring as well on these
things.

So, does anybody know the ICBC policy regarding the forestry roads? At what
point do you not require a D/L or insurance? These things seem to start out
as really good gravel roads and degrade into unmaintained, to decomissioned,
to deer trails.... must be some point where they're not concidered a public
thrufares anymore. Or whatever.

"Destination Highways" ( http://www.destinationhighways.com/ ) (no
affiliatioon, but a must-have for anybody visiting BC on a bike) doesn't
explore gravel. Any must see offroad targets in BC to shoot for? I need an
excuse to buy a dirt bike and take it with me on these trips. I'm sure you
guys could help me out with this ;o)

Cheers

ps can.rec.motorcycles......good idea

I use to live the the Queen Charlotte's and the logging roads were
private, you could basically do anything there as it was private property.
We just stopped at the MacBlo office to ask where there current operations
were and a map, and stayed away from the operational areas.
I would get at least PL/PD though, just to be on the safe side. As for
a D/L, ask the ICBC office, they'll tell you.
