You were stuck in traffic on I-579 in Pittsburgh. I cruised
past on your right while you were stuck in traffic waiting
for the ramp to the Liberty Bridge.

I was on a blue BMW oilhead. You were riding some kind of
big black sport bike. I didn't catch the brand 'cause I was
paying more attention to your gear.

You were wearing a blue, short sleeve golf shirt, baggy kahki
shorts, and slate grey, low-cut athletic shoes. No socks, no
gloves. Oh, and you were wearing a black, full face helmet.

Dude! What's up with the helmet? Y'know, if you crash in
that getup and your head hits a light pole or something, you
could wake up in a hospital bed, somewhere in a world of
unending, unbelievable agony. But if you would only just
loose the helmet, you could have the same accident, and end
up comfortably dead before they even get your carcass loaded
onto the ambulance.

I'm pretty sure if I slid even twenty feet on dry pavement
dressed like you were dressed, I would rather not live to
tell the tale.

I'd swear I saw the same guy last summer riding a yellow
sportbike in Bovina, TX. I didn't realize he moved to PA.

He must have been just passing through. I saw him yesterday in Oak Glen
California riding a 'Busa.

I think he wisened up a little 'cause he was in Colorado yesterday with the
same bike, same outfit, but no helmet... racing between the stoplights.

For some reason, I believed that watching him die in front of me would bring
forth a great feeling of joy.

I was robbed of that joy.

Bastard.

It doesn't teach most of 'em anything anyway.

At a track day a while ago I met a young couple who had been ejected from an
R1 on the freeway while wearing no safety equipment but helmets. (It was a
borrowed bike, they were doing a wheelie in traffic, and the speed was circa
80 mph.)
Their broken bones and road rash were sickening, even a month after the
fact, but when I suggested that next time they'd probably be wearing more
than shorts and tee-shirts, the girl turned and said "NO! What's the use of
riding a bike if you can't feel free?!"

God, I hope that they don't breed.

I lived in Vegas for a long time. Heard there was a bunch of guys that went
out and rode Red Rock Loop early sunday mornings. Went out to the meeting
spot, there was one guy there that looked like it had been a long night and
wasn't too talkative. Some other guys showed up, all sportbikes, and one of
them talked to the first guy, who said, loosely:

"Not sure how well I'll do today 'cause I was running the DI flyover last
night with this new guy and he wadded into the divider at about 130. Tore
his head clean off. The cop said "bet you'll slow down now" and I said
"Fuck no! I don't wanna live forever, asshole." "

I don't think we need to worry about 'em breeding.

He must be fast on the move, I saw him on a green Kawasaki sportbike
this weekend outside Hotlanta.
