What would you ride?
I figure a FJR1300 (older model... you know the one that apparently
cooks your marbles (or canoe)) sounds good.... shaft drive to keep the
(Ontario) salt out too. The only thing would be trying to stabilize a
600lb bike if you ever hit an icy patch. I figure the windscreen would
keep you relatively warm. Of course, my helmet would likely fog up and
I would be found next spring thawing out of the side of a snowdrift.
I wonder if they sell DP tires for the FJ?

I'm sure you could find some tires that would work. They used to do ice
racing around here at Blackstrap Lake with bikes and Austin Minis. Could
you imagine Spiked tires on an FJ1300! That would be incredible The
coldest I've ever ridden was 45 minutes to work in Saskatoon at 2 degrees on
my Katana. The helmet did fog up then so I think you'd need an electric
face shield LOL. Not to mention Electric Pants and Jacket and Boots and
Gloves...Winter is not my season!

Hey Head Cheese,
I love the pic of Hector...
It looks like you have to tinker a bit to make the Ural reliable. Did
you have to do much to keep it running? Is it electronic ignition?

The first few thousand km's were a bit maintenance intensive, but nothing too serious. I should point out that I was pretty hard on the rig, what with riding it all winter through salt, slush, etc. Not your normal environment for a bike. But the beauty of these machines lie in their simplicity, even if you're not a hands-on type any motorcycle shop can work on them without requiring any special tools.
Yes, it is electronic ignition, currently made in Russia. Mine has fired the bike through 21,000km without missing a beat. The 2007 models are getting the Ducati ignition system, which many feel is a precursor to fuel injection for '08.
