Was wondering if anyone has any ride time on CRF250X and what initial
thoughts on the bike are?

Dan -

The only ones to ride the bike, except some special Honda folks, are
magazine guys and that won't be up until March.

Honda says that the bikes will be in stores late February.

Thanks, look like heck of a bike. Anxious to watch how it shakes out this
year. Considering buying one the end of the year if they end up as good as
all the hype out there now.

I see that Cycle News has an article in the issue that is now out, need to
find a copy.

It's on the cover of this week's Cycle News, which has yet to reach me.

Indeed. At $5999, it looks very attactive. Too bad they didn't put a real
skid plate on it. Do that, bump the tank capacity to 3 gallons, add bark
busters, & it looks like a great woods machine. Probably revalve the
suspension. 228# (claimed) dry weight. Happy fun button. Hmmmm...
Might be a candidate for my next bike. I'm hoping the engine is a little
less maintenance intensive than the 450.

They said in the article that it had re-valved suspension and softer
springs. I agree with you on the 3 gallon tank. The most impressive
thing I got from the write up was that it was a completely different
bike than the R model, engine, suspension, 18" rear wheel, wide ratio
tranny all make it sound like a killer woods bike. I wonder if they
will be smart enough to make a *C* model in a 450cc bike?

So maybe the bike will be perfect for a fat guy like me right off the shelf?
Goodie. Personally, however, I'd prefer the tight-ratio tranny - I think
they are better for woods riding since speeds are typically pretty constant
and generally low. Save the 'W' trannies for the wacko desert types.

I'm thinking it might be coming, since if I understand what was inferred
to me ("We can't confirm or deny that"), Summers will be riding for
Honda and modifying that in the GNCC in '04. He rode one the end of
last year and.

The bike at the motorcycle show is interesting. All the "plastic"
(except the front fender) was actually fiberglass! It was much fun to
watch people look at it and then feel the stuff. Wish we'd had a video
camera there!

The advantage of the wide ratio tranny is being able to
do a low first gear for knarly TST, and still have decent
top speed on the connector roads. With the close-ratio,
you'd have to go to an obscenely large rear sprocket to
ride TST.

The other solution is a 6-speed tranny.

Oh, wait... I've got a 6-speed. And my rear sprocket, well, er,
OK, I'm a pussy.

For $5100, a fellow could get a 6 speed, ready to be dual sported,
competition ready, new '03 Gas Gas EC250.
Of course, it is not a 4-stroke. It's as smooth as one. Just
quicker. Without fuel, the bike weighs #236. (no fun button, though)

That was the one they had a Daytona last year. I moved the kickstart
lever and it dropped straight down!

The one at this year's NY show was real.

Just got the issue last night. CN loved it, of course. They sadi
that the "opened up" bikes they rode had no real advantage over the
stockers.
