The next round is on me.
One of my passing lamps burned out (Road King), so I got 2 replacements.
(I figure if one burned out, the other isn't far behind)
The original lamps have a black "plastic" case,
and the Harley OEM replacements are "glass".
But when I tried to mount them back into the buckets, they won't
snap all the way on into place.
I put the burned out lamp back in, and it snaps completely on.
I swapped the lamps several times, making sure to line up the notches.
Every time, the original lamp snaps completely into place, but the OEM doesn't.
WTF?

Wondering if the parts DUDE, fucked up~
I have often used my parts manual to verify what they looked up in the SAME book,
only there might a difference is when they really do revise the design, revA,B,C
etc.
On occasion I have caught them giving me the wrong item.
Regardless the revised part should still fit the original assembly unless they
revised the bucket too!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: replacement passling lamps don't fit |

I had the same problem with my replacement bulb. It the originals have the
plastic back with two tabs to align it opposed to the replacement bulb with
the glass back and one tab. It fit on my bike in the original trim rings
(glad I kept them), but there wasn't any way they were gonna fit in the
bigger trim rings that I happen to like. (and paid for). Pissed me off but
I am back to the original trim rings until I need to take it somewhere to
get something done to it then I will have someone else try. I think the
size is a little off on the new one.

I changed one of my passing lamps last year [housing and all] because a buddy
of mine knocked it off......don't ask. Anyway, when I went to replace the
housing I noticed that it was different than the original. The surface of the
housing where the lamp rested was part of the housing on the original. Looked
like the metal was folded over to form a ledge for the bulb to rest on. The
replacement housing did not incorporate that ledge. Instead, a preformed ring
[separate of the housing] was part of the package.
It appears that the MoCo or their vendor may have done some research and found
that they could make the housing cheaper by eliminating a production process or
two. Anyway, it may be that you have a bulb that fits the new housing because,
IIRC, the new bulb indexing tabs were slightly different than the old. That may
not be the case for you, but at least it's a starting point.

As has been mentioned, they changed the housings on the newer bikes. You can
always upgrade to the halogen replacements, then you'll only be replacing
3-dollar bulbs instead of the whole sealed beams. Brighter, whiter and
better light pattern too. If ya ever decide to use 55w bulbs I wouldn't
recommend using 'em in stop n go traffic. They eat up a lot of juice at
idle.
