How does that saying go -"you never know what you had until it's gone". Well
it's damn true. Until a month ago I was the proud owner of a XR250, only
this was no ordinary XR. It had everything from Excel rims, Acerbis tank and
goodies to huge desert style headlamps. How I loved that little bike !
Always started first or second kick, it took me over mountains and through
streams and even used it to commute. But like many people I started to look
at bigger and faster bikes, bikes that had more comfort and gadgets like rev
counters and heat gauges. To buy this new bike I had to sell my trusty XR,
it turned out to be a huge mistake. Now as the owner of a "dual sport" that
has no ground clearance and weighs a ton I miss the little XR more and more
each day. How I miss the trails and the simplicity of my old RFVC engine. I
could carry a couple of tools on my XR and be confident of fixing any
problem that could arise, now with my fancy road traillie and could not even
get to my throttle cable when it snapped while wallowing along on a dead
straight dirt road. I even asked the guy who bought my XR from me if he
would sell it back to me if I offered him more than he paid, his answer "not
a chance I'm having too much fun on that bike !". Needless to say I'm
selling and getting another XR, now if I could just find one !

Rex,

I guess the good news is is that there are lots of XRs out there to be
had. Those 250s wern't too good on the freeway but they can do
anything else. Nothing like having a trustworthy bike.

I miss the hell out of my 2001 YZ125, the bike was a blast. Wish I hadn't
sold it.

Good luck in your hunt for another XR that is suitable!

I gave my 1960 Ducati Monza to the Ducati dealer because I knew I'd
never fix the clutch and at least SOME part of her might survive. I
still miss her. I gave my Kaw F7 to a guy who thought he could use
her. He actually did, which was good. She definitely went to a better
home too. I miss my son's Kaw KX250, which he gave away. Sell bikes?
Who does that? It's like selling children, or beloved pets.

I regret selling my kid's first bike. I don't miss any of mine. If I
can - and it's possible - locate his, I think I may try to get it
back.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

No. I had a YZ 490 that defied being jetted correctly and would shake
you half to death with it's vibration and I had to replace lost nuts , bolts
and screws due to that.........DESPITE checking and tightening before every
ride, all it took was ONE long ride to fully loosen a nut, bolt or screw. On
top of that , I had to find the most potent fuel that was reasonable to use
in that engine so that it did not ping. I could never find one that was
really adequate enough to completely eliminate the problem although it sure
helped alot. In short, I have never been so happy about selling a motorcycle
in my entire life .....and I even lost money on the deal.

A guy my cousin knows has this *showroom* condition ( and I
ain't kiddin!) absolute MINT 1983 Maico 490 Spider for sale with less than *5*
hours on the original engine ( yes you read it right) I want it so I am selling
the YZ. If anyone's interested here some info on it: 1988 YZ 490 , VG cond, new
tires, new works performance shock) FMF gold series pipe, brand new front brake
rotor, new rear brakes, head ported by the famous Eric Gorr. Oh, and the bike
has *only* been trail ridden. Makes a great unexpectedly mild mannered but
balsy bullet proof trail bike that will pull tree stumps or run with the best
of them. Anyone interested , email me. NY/NJ area.

As a matter of fact, I had an XR250 that I was secretly glad to be rid
of. Hard to start, lumbering on the trails, and missing the all
important e-start.

I had two CR500Rs (a '97 and a '99). 'nuff said.

That may be my next new bike too, I had been looking at the current offerings
but prefer red or blue because of the good local support, but won't buy one
that has a 5-speed gearbox. The new '05 125 blue one is supposed to go back to
a 6-speed.

Yep, despite the inherent problems from the FACTORY ( excessive
vibration and pinging) the bike was and is BULLETPROOF. It never broke down,
nothing ever broke on it ( loose nuts or bolts don't count as broken ones in
my book). The vibration and pinging problems with the YZ 490's are common
and usually well known ( in the event that you did not know this) and in
the case of the gentleman that purchased it from me, he knew the 490's
inherent problems very well beforehand. Some people just love those bikes no
matter what. If you can put up with/tolerate or try to endlessly tinker
with the pinging and vibration problems it's a great bike that has excellent
power.
