1100 Virago, made seemingly forever, plenty of them about, so couldn't be
expensive. Shaft drive and plenty spares available I'd think. And it's a
Yamaha.

Not so many about as you might think, in my experience. Tried and failed
to find a reasonably new one for past 3 months. Those who have 'em love
'em. I'm just about to sell my '86. Finally time to let it go. Pity
Yamaha don't make 'em anymore. Spares for older models can be hard to find.

Not *any* Guzzi. He shouldn't try a Quota unless he can get a ladder
cheap.

Having owned a Virago1100 for several years, I can say nice, good torquey
bike and cruises happily on 110km/s but the tank size will probably let you
down. Mine had a tank capacity of 14 litres + 3 reserve which equates to
about 250 kms on the open road. So be prepared for regular fuel stops.

Have a look at the VT750C, a steal at around 10,000. You can get a range of
aftermarket luggage for it, pillion space looks ok and for a jap cruiser
doesn't look bad either.

Nice add-ons for a trip around oz would be:

1) Windshield
2) Throttle lock
3) Heated grips
4) sheepskin

hah.

I just assumed that BTH was 'noting' that the 1100cc Virago was capable
of the enormous feat of cruising at 110.....
