From what I know, and I can't say I'm 100% accurate, but I've looked
into this due to having a pikey plate on the Alfa.....

The bike will need to be MOTd to get the plate off it and even if it was
MOTd it can only be transferred to another bike, not a car.

The 'not registered' bit could change things a bit - have you checked to
see if said plate actually exists or not? - you may be in for a shock if
you put it into an insurance company's website for a quote.

Halla (halla@drunkenbastards.spam.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like
they were saying :

If you haven't got a V5 that matches both bike and plate, then you haven't
got the number TO transfer.

If you haven't got a live or expired-within-six-months MOT, then you can't
transfer the number off.

If you get the number re-allocated to the bike, the V5 will probably say
"non-transferable", anyway.

Eeek! Thank for that. I've now resisted a GTR1000 in Wales and a
C15 in Scotland.

I'm a model of restraint, really.
