Post subject: new to me place to ride in nw washington
Archived from groups: rec>motorcycles>dirt (more info?)

yesterday a buddy and i were riding gravel roads on private land (tree farm
open to public) when we found a few
atv and cycle/horse trails. we had a blast riding on them. most trails
went from one switchback leg to the next in a
round about manner. some were just really old logging roads that had
deteriated to trails. the only markings on the
trails were orange ribbons at the start, end, and intersections of the
trails. i have not seen this set of trails listed anywhere
on the net. Lots of jeep style vehicles had used the main roads and torn up
several areas. there were mud holes/ruts that
were 2 feet deep in places, but not as bad as some places i've seen. very
little motorcycle used was seen, mostly horses.
the whole area is mostly mud with traction gravel underneath it....but the
ground is fairly dry now due to unseasonable
unbelievable weather. so these are the questions:
1. how selfish am I if i don't publish where this fun site is?
2. would you?
3. If i do publish the site and it gets torn up; am i likely to publish in
the future?
4. who wants to go riding with us there next time?
5. do you think i ought to approach the local cycle org. to approach the
land owners and suggest
that the club volunteer to keep the area clean and maintain/build trails?

Extraordinarily selfish. I mean, we're like rmd brothers, right?
Sheesh.

 > 2. would you?

Sure. Want directions to my house so you ride on my mind-bogglingly
tight 20 miles of woods trails? Our biggest problem is getting enough
traffic to keep the brush back.
Also, if every rmder in Washington State showed up to ride on your new
trails, it would have almost no impact. There just aren't that many of
us up here.

 > 3. If i do publish the site and it gets torn up; am i likely to
publish in
 > the future?

Probably not, under those circumstances.
I'd sure think twice about it.

 > 4. who wants to go riding with us there next time?

Maybe. Depends on how far it is, how many miles of trail are available,
how technical the trails are, etc.

 > 5. do you think i ought to approach the local cycle org. to approach
the

trails?

It seems like the right thing to do, but it might just bite you in the
ass, too. It depends on how aware the owners are about the current use
of the land, and how good the club is at negotiating. I can easily see
this approach ending with bikes and ORVs banned, while horses, mountain
bikers, and hikers continue to use the trails. On our very informal
trail system we are crossing back and forth from DNR land (powerline
right of way) to a patchwork of private land. We try really hard to
take care of the land while building/maintaining trails, which we share
with quite a few local equestrians. In fact, most of the existing trail
system was laid out and cut by one middle aged lady horse rider, God
bless her. She is very happy and greatful to have us helping with
construction and maintenance. Since we never really know for sure
whether we're on public or private land we have adapted a don't ask,
don't tell policy. Without the trails we make, property owners would
have virtually no access to their own property. Our trails open up the
woods for them.
So far, so good.

I'm off Highway 7 (the Mountain Highway) south of Tacoma.
Sounds like a long drive for either of us. I don't think I have enough to
offer for that trip, if that's all you were coming for. There's a lot of
fine mountains between us, though. We must hook up sometime.

I've never ridden at White Pass. I have a friend who has a cabin up
there somewhere. He says the riding is pretty cool.
Tahuya is OK as long as the ground isn't dry.
Ever ride Naches or Gifford-Pinchot?
Any of these places would be good. Keep in touch.

naches nor gifford, however. a couple of times i rode at an atv/jeep area

it was small and crowded with jeeps.
white pass has lots of elk in the area to view, but when i was there the
snow stopped us from
going very far....pretty country.

down near kelso there is a beach along the river with sand dunes that is a
fun ride once...only.

to the east of vancouver is a power line motorcycle area with trails, but
when i rode there, I had
only ridden my bike three or four times. so i didn't dare try any
trails...was having a hard time going
down steep trails and my bike was geared way to high then.

been to capitol forest once and it was all right....wouldn't mind going
back.

you ought to come up and ride around Reiter Pit, outside of Goldbar on
Highway 2 sometime. it
has a little of almost everything...not a lot of mud, but plenty of water
and rocks.
we ride there quite often as it is one of the closest good rides.

If you were south of I-90, which you must have been if you were south of Cle
Elum, then you were in the same trail system as Naches, just entering it
from the other side. There is better camping on the Naches side, but the
better trails are closer to the CleElum/Taneum Creek side. I rather enjoy
the commute from the Naches side, though. Anyway, that puts this one solidly
on target for a get aquainted hook up.

Evans Creek. Pretty views, and a little nice single track, but yeah, mostly
a jeep place. The views of Mt. Rainier can't be beat, though.

Yea, it is. It should be pretty similar to Naches, it's only about 15 or 20
miles away. from there. See pervious comments about no personal riding
experience there. A real possibility.

I grew up about 15 minutes away from the Pismo Beach/Oceano Dunes in
California. If I'm going to the dunes, I want REAL dunes, not little sand
hills. Closest thing that counts would be Florence Oregon. Would have to buy
a paddle tire, too. Not a bad idea...

Hm-m-m, and that puts it in the vicinity of Washougal, too. There's some
potential there.

That's the closest "real" riding area to me. I don't like it much, though
there are parts of it that are pretty fun. For the most part, it's too
whooped out. Oh yeah, and I broke all of my ribs on the right side there in
'94. All that being said, I'd be potentially up for that, too.

I haven't been to Goldbar in years, the last time was for the Goldminer (I
think that's what it was called) Enduro in about '95 or '96. Goldbar can be
fun. Brutal, too. I like that. Do you know the area well? I'd like to ride
with some local knowledge, I've never really gotten around there very well
except on race days. Marked courses are good for that sort of thing. This
one is high on my list. We should definitely do this one sometime (maybe a
little later in the Spring when it's slightly, uh, drier. I remember lots of
mossy rocks up there.

   >>>reiter pit has a little of everything, but not as much mud as you would
think.
the soil isn't there to make much mud. there's usually lots of water, but
this year is
different. there is no telling what the place will be like. be ready for
log hopping,
and rock bouncing, and power line trails through sand. a couple of good
viewpoints
really make the day for pictures. one of them is a cliff that sits right on
top of the town
of Index. the other is a mountain view that rivals Harts Pass off Highway
20.
I've ridden there probably 20 times and there are still trails that i
haven't been on.
when there is a cycle meet there the place is a real zoo. there is another
trail that i want to
do some work on this year that goes to the top of Wallace falls. it is an
old logging road
that used to continue on through the woods to wallace lake and about 4 other
lakes. probably
about 20 miles worth of unused roads now. the only other entrances to that
area seem to be
through private property...so i haven't been able to get there. reiter pit
is only an hour away
for me to drive; so i'm almost always up to go there. it's just days off
that i have to arrange.
work...i'm ready to retire before my time.
