When spannering on a car, and in accordance with Murphy's Law, the
dropped component rolls underneath to the exact diametric centre of
the vehicle - I found myself reaching for the extendible
magnet-onna-stick for retrieval purposes rather than sliding
underneath and getting hold of said recalcitrant component.
Now - is that a sign of giving in to age, or merely finally getting a
bit smarter?

No, if you were smarter you wouldn't have dropped the object in the
first place

For me its every time I see someone celebrating their 21st birthday, cos
that's the day I had my 2nd heart attack.

Thank you, everything feels alright in the world now.
I was about to consider how wise it was to join a friends birthday party
when I was due back at work tomorrow after being signed off for the
last 10 weeks with depression. Lovely meal accompanied by several
glasses of very nice wine, obligatory night club with several glasses of
over priced champagne, finally leaving *early* at 2:30AM because "I
have work in the morning".

If you were really giving in to age you wouldn't have been doing the
spannering in the first case. You would have been sitting comfortably in
front of the TV, smoking a pipe, whilst wearing slippers and a cardigan,
having had your car collected for servicing by your estimable Honda
dealer.
