I had to ride my bike in the rain yesterday, and the manual states that I
should oil the chain if I ride the bike in the rain. The problem is that the
manual doesn't really tell me how to do this.

Could some one explain to me how to oil the chain using the oil that the
manual recommends.

It's gonna' be tough, but you need to pick the bike up and dip the rear tire
tire in a large pot of oil. While you are holding it, have a friend start
it and put it in first gear so the submerged tire/wheel/sprocket assembly
gets fully coated with oil. Lower bike and wipe off any excess oil.

OR

Get the chain warm, a short ride will work and you can tell the wife it's a
"must for maintenance". Put the bike on the center stand, spray chain lube
on the chain while your spinning the rear tire with your hand. Go around
twice and then have a beer and sandwich.

The new, smarter than the manual recommendation goes like this.

One drop of gear lube per roller. While chain is warm. Let sit over night.
Ride a few thousand more miles and repeat as necessary.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

You got it part way Troy... actually the routing goes like this...

One drop of 90 wt synthetic gear lube inside the chain per roller while
the chain is warm from the past ride...

Let oil soak in until just before the next ride and then wipe excess off
with a gas damp rag...

Repeat the routine every tank full of gas to insure the least amount of
HP lost due to a chains inherent inefficiency...

Just a little side note about the petty semantics of the YZF's kickstand
mechanism.....it is not to well engineered. It folds up very easily.
If you do no-stand, roll-lube-roll method of chain lubing be careful to
make sure your bikes stand is clicked into place properly.
How do I know.....................? Sad

I've found through trial and error, while holding the bike in the pot,
revving the engine to redline in each gear does a more complete job.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

And remember to only use motorcycle specific lube on your baby's chain!
Don't be a fool and put that stuff on that's formulated for cars and trucks.

Yes, what Troy said. Warm chain is best, i.e. directly after riding a while.
Gear oil can be found at many auto parts stores, or motorcycle shops. I
bought my last quart of at a Suzuki dealership for less than $5. Even came
with a little squeeze nozzle to help get the oil where I want it. Sometimes
it's labeled as "hypoid gear oil" or even "shaft drive oil", 80-90 wt.

Don't use the gunky spray-on chain lubes/waxes, not unless you enjoy
cleaning that junk off your wheels and letting it accumulate crap around
your countershaft sprocket.

why messy oil
BelRay has wonderful chain sprays that make no mess - no fling off - no
wiping required

Put the bike on the centre stand
Spin the wheel with one hand and spray the whole chain both sides with the
other.
It makes an easy lub in 60 seconds
No centre stand?
Use 2 car stands.
One under each swing arm to hold the back end up
Only 1 swing arm?
Use a car jack with a piece of flat wood somewhere under the back end of the
engine and up it goes.
you cant use too much chain spray
you cant spray too often<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Sounds great. Why don't you run that for about 20k miles and then tell me
what's piled up under your countershaft sprocket cover? If it doesn't fling
off, it's because it's sticky. If it's that sticky, do you think it might
collect road debris (gravel, sand, etc) over time? Lemme see, sticky stuff
grabbing road debris and holding it very close to my chain and the
o-rings... no thanks. I've seen the mess under the sprocket cover; I'll
pass.
