Mind if I hijack?
I was only thinking tonight of an eco-PC to do basic myth type stuff and
file sharing without gobbling up megawatts.
So if people want to consider power consumption when replying...

Clockwork? She needs one that runs on methane, which can be sourced
locally.
Very locally. >> Stay informed about: mini ITX Satellite PVR |

It'll do freesat[1] and BBC HD, though you need a decent dual core CPU
to render BBC Hi Def.
With appropriate software, it can clear a lot of furrin channels on
Astra 1 and Hotbird. Many of the movie channels have English soundtracks.
[1]With the exception of Channels 4 and 5, which still need the Sky
Freesat card. >> Stay informed about: mini ITX Satellite PVR |

I've gone the way of the home NAS setup, with a media extender under
the TV. I had planned to get an Apple TV, but saw some reviews of the
KISS 1600 and went for that instead (contains a DVD player, so it
nicely eliminates a box).
The whole thing works without any computers being switched on, which
is a bonus. DVD archiving is something I can do without, given that
encoding to DVD is a lossy and time-consuming process, and that hard
disk space is so cheap. As and when I start running out of space I'll
just add more disks to the NAS, and/or archive off some stuff to DVD-
ROM through the laptop, as opposed to playable DVD.
I've got a Freeview twin tuner PVR for standard telly watching, though
this might get binned the next time the TV gets upgraded. I'm less
convinced of the need to use broadcast as a source for collecting
programmes given the prevalence of free download services like iPlayer
and 4OD, especially since the relevant tools are easily available to
relax (ahem) some of the restrictions on use, and increasingly this is
the way I get my programming. Well, that, and my Lovefilm
subscription ...
The DVD player/media streamer was £200, the NAS (Linksys) was £50,
plus an afternoon's faffing. >> Stay informed about: mini ITX Satellite PVR |

The main additional things I want in a PVR are:
1. Ability to record to DVD. I like collectting movies, and various
other stuff.
2. Lots of disk space - I'm on the limit with my current 'media'
partition of 160Gb (which is about 80 hours)
I've also got all my music on it (cos it plays back through my AV
amp), and am slowly getting all my digital photos on it too (I think
the a media PC with a big TV is *the* way to look at/show digital
photos).
Don't get me wrong, Sky+ is pretty good, and does 90% of what a PVR
should. But that other 10% is important to me.
Also, don't you have to pay extra for Sky+? Or is it free now?

I achieved these by purchasing a Sony DVD/HD recorder. It also does
1080p upscaling on DVDs so makes the most of my TV. Top bit of kit.

I'm still thinking of plugging a PC into the telly, but it'll be for
gaming, and using as a PC, just on a large screen from the comfort of my
sofa.
