Well that would at least explain why they take so long to complete.

Easy - average 140 between the two points - then wait by your letterbox.
Hey ho - answer delivered in writing with photographic evidence.

Dunno, but honestly, speeding in roadworks is a real mug's game. They've
got loads of cameras and they usually use unmarked cars as well. I swear
some roadworks must run at a profit.

Which of the following will happen to you first ?.
1) Lose licence.
2) Kill a roadworker.
3) Die.

Roadworks are dangerous places, the speed limit is there for good reasons.

Rubbish.

I've seen 186mph on the clock of my old Gixer thou through roadworks at
Leicester on my way to Donington up the M1, and I'm still alive.

Well, up to a point, Lord Copper.

For roadworks where work is going on, that's quite true. However, I'm
sure we've all driven past miles of cones with not a person in sight.

Coming out of Bristol on the M32 in the late '90s was one long contraflow.
It was possible to filter like a cunt if you didn't mind bumping over a lot
of 3D paint features.

1 and 3 suggest that it's a mug's game; only 2 would indicate a total
cunt's game.
Have you got any evidence linking accidents with exceeding the posted
speed limit?

The statistics for fatal incidents in roadworks are scary, including
the deaths of several roadworkers every year.
OTOH, the amount of road coned for no apparant reason does not encourage
respect for the limits.

As a writer to The Times once pointed out, they even put a load of cones
to blank off a usable lane, calling it an "experimental lane closure".

"What," he asked, after sitting in a huge tailback, "did they think was
likely to happen?"
