Got a friend who is looking for a first timer dirt bike, for her boy... He's
7, and my first thought was a 50cc no-name brand, but she said she wanted to
save as much money for helmet as possible... I didn't ask her how much she
had to spend, I will next time I talk to her...

Can I get some suggestions as to what brand to be looking for, I'm sure
she'll pass on the big names=big bucks bikes...

LM, or Kazuma, or some others that I've never heard of, or the like... Got
any names for me to use in my searches???

Much appreciation for any help....

Good idea on her part.-

There's a Chinese clone-copy of the venerable Honda 50, the Lynx 50
made by Jincheng that should be in the budget-range, another clone of
the 50 is made by Lifan.

Doesn't look too henious:

Seems to go by different names:

LEM? They are much more developed bikes, and are I think race bikes,
with *probably* altogether better componants and suspension than
ANYTHING from China, so is Polini - more high-strung and more
expensive. KTM's too - though it appears the LEM has a front
drum-brake.
Just for viewing:

Notice the disc brakes and suspension.

I use to have a 50cc Italjet when I was about 7. They come with or without
shifting thingy's. Nice little two-stroke plonkers, were sturdy and cheap
then (otherwise I wouldn't have gotten it), don't know now. They're into
scooters right now, can't tell if they still make MX'ers. Find a second hand
one? Dunno...

My current neighbourhood kid rides a 70cc Jincheng bike, actually a
fourstroke shifter that looks like a XR, and sounds the works (I'm jealous,
I ride a big two-stroke). He is having a ball on it every weekend, he's 9. A
friend of his rips along on a blue Yamaha YZ, too much noise I guess (It's
almost in MY backyard)

Jincheng is known for pattern-Honda rip-offs (fairly dated, but I bet the
kid's not yet a fashion-addict) at about half the price.

LEM, and the likes are genuine race-bikes, with the KTM on top. Don't ever
give that to a kid I would say.
Stick with something Chinese-Taiwanese that looks like a Honda, and you're
in sound. Look for something like Italjet and that would be nice also. Have
fun searching it!

Helmets are a good thing, especially for little kids who don't have
the neck-muscle development of an outside linebacker -- the head is a
big weight on a small string.
I don't really know much about the small bikes but there are others
here who've had a lot of experience with them, and some discussions
I've followed make the LEM and others sound more high-tech etc. - and
some of them little racers break a lot, so mini-dads have to wrench a
lot.
The low-stressed Chinese-clones of a 30-year old Honda design are
probably more on the money for a mom buying a yard-scrambler for her
kid.
Good luck!

Buy a used XR50. Kid rides it for a year and outgrows it. Sell Honda
50 for same amount you paid. Buy used XR70. Kid rides it for a year
.... Repeat as needed.

Seriously, this is the lowest cost way of putting kids and bikes
together. Hondas are stone reliable, easy to re-sell, don't
significantly depreciate after a few years, and parts availability is
excellent. And if the kid decides he likes
[soccer|baseball|skateboards] better you are not out anything. My 5
year old has been riding an XR50 for almost a year and is doing great.
Maybe she should start with an XR70.
