In my state (VA), it is illegal to use headphones for anything other
than intracomms with your passenger. Too bad, a cheap pair of in-
helmet phones and an iPOD in my pocket is all I really need when
cruising.
I've sorta inquired about this before but some of the answers I got
were just way beyond my ability to do or want to pay to have done,
but... I'd like to know what is needed to play music externally from
my iPOD. I don't want anything fancy.
I can position the iPOD on the bars easily enough, but what's next?
I guess I need a power amp since the iPOD functions really only as a
preamp, right? If so, what small power amp is easily installable by a
half-axxed installer and do I need to install a relay to make sure I
don't over power circuits? And where do you put speakers on a bike
that doesn't have a batwing fairing and still be able to hear them?
Thanks,
Greg >> Stay informed about: OK, now that I know it's illegal... |

Another option in Virginia is to use a single speaker in your helmet.
That is legal. Of course, you don't get stereo that way, but if you
combine both channels into one speaker, you can still enjoy your music
inside your helmet, legally. >> Stay informed about: OK, now that I know it's illegal... |

The penalty paid if you get run over by a hook and ladder truck that
you didn't hear because those headphone speakers were blaring
"Bohemian Rhapsody" at max volume is considerably higher, though! >> Stay informed about: OK, now that I know it's illegal... |

In their "best sounding and loudest motorcycle stereo audio units on
the market" Rumble Road $ 279 package, they use

IOW, it's a $ 26 pair of speakers, at heart. This is their 'best /
biggest baddest' item.

The question is how illegal is it and what are the risks. I can't
find a specific penalty listed for violation of 42.6-1078 of the
Virginia Code, which suggests that the 46.2-113 general provision
applies, allowing a maximum fine of $250 per 18.2-11. It's also 3
points for 3 years.
These penalties are considerably less than for 10 over the speed limit
and you'r far less likely to get caught for the phones alone than for,
say, 10 over.

Just to be contrary. Are you saying that deaf people can't ride / drive
safely?
Use your eyes people and use the mirror.
Although I accept your point that people with hearing are easily distracted

Unless I get quieter pipes I am not even going to try to add tunes to
the RK. With the wind distorted sound from the mp3 added to the pipe
and motor noise it is probably a recipe for a headache.

I've never had any trouble hearing a siren with earbuds in place.

Listening to "BR" would seem to be its own penalty. Getting run over
is simply a bonus feature.

If you look at those Rumble Road speakers they are little more than a
very cheap amp attached to some even cheaper speakers mounted in a
couple of chrome spotlamps.
The spotlamps can be had for twenty bucks each at Princess Auto. I'd
use the Polk Audio DB401 marine speakers. Great speakers. I have them
in the Venture. I'd have to do some research to find an amp that would
fit in the spotlamp but I doubt it would be hard to find.
Add a couple of bar clamps and an afternoon in the garage and you have
yourself a sound system.

Apparently there's no clear conclusion on that:
<http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/documents/hearing2.pdf>
But I don't think it's relevant anyways. If you can't hear sirens over
your headphones, you're doing it wrong and will go deaf. You should be
using headphones that deaden the outside noise so the music doesn't have
to be so loud. It's really no different from cars. Cars advertise
blocking outside noise all the time, and you don't see chicken littles
screaming about putting the public in jeapordy. In my years of
experience riding a motorcycle with earbuds, I never had a close call
attributable to hearing, and I can hear sirens and horns. >> Stay informed about: OK, now that I know it's illegal... |
