Is there anyone here with extensive off-road riding (MX, HS,
Trials, Trails, Enduro, Desert, Dunes, whatever) experience who's
never been seriously injured? Minor cuts, abrasions, bruises and light
sprains don't count. Even stitches don't count unless bone was showing
and more than four were required to patch you up.
We've heard the ghastly stories, now I'd like to hear something a
little more encouraging. I myself have taken a crapload of spills, but
never broke or fractured a bone, never had a concussion (that I'm
aware of), never needed my spleen repaired nor a joint relocated. I
haven't had an accident that required a ton of stitches nor one that
required emergency services or rescue.
I think I'm just an expert crasher. <g>
(Now I'll crash this weekend and be paralyzed I'm sure).

Broke a toe. I believe I broke 1 or two feet- search here on RMD for
"June 26 broken-foot RR". I don't think I've ever had a concussion.
Also, I don't think I've ever had a concussion.

Sorry, can't help you there.
I've been racing for 32 years, and still have my spleen, but let's just
leave it at that.

i have ridden sporadically over the last 30 years
I've split frames rims bars helmets but some how nothing on me
worse than a sore tailbone from a silly idea to impress
some girl with my ability to shift while doing a wheelie <in shorts...>
(i got to 6th gear before testosterone set me on my butt)
BTW i no longer do wheelies, let alone big air i go mike w slow
and enjoy the ride & the views. i ride for me and don't perform for
others (this has altered my unexpected get off ratio in a good way)
i ride in my comfort zone not some one else's zone. yes i know i could go
faster but i have no desire to end up like steve austin or that kid
from phoenix

Not extensive riding. I ride motorcycles since 97 and off road since 98. My worst crashes were on
the street... Eight stitches on left foot and on another crash I lost the skin of both arms, legs,
back... Off roading I often get purple circles on random spots and hurt my knee twice... Nothing
serious, that can't be cured with ice...

That was my thought exactly. In 5MOH, at the last rest stop,
I commented that I hadn't dropped my bike yet. I think you can
guess what happened in the next 5 minutes.

Except for that concussion thing a few weeks ago.
The worst damage I've had riding a bike was some road
rash crashing my street bike near the "Rock Store" on
Mulholland Hwy in So. Cal.
The two broken toes I got the last day of riding @ ISF02
and a moderate case of Monkey Butt.
Knock on woody.
At least that's all I can remember at the moment.....duh!

A couple of somewhat major injuries so I don't really qualify, but an
interesting thing (still on topic!) happened Sunday.
Passed up riding the Lead Belt National Enduro to take care of some
things at home. While taking care of one of these "things" I was
jockeying a trailer around using my riding mower. As I stepped off the
mower, my right ankle rolled over (gave out or whatever) and I collapsed
in a heap on the ground. Could barely walk on Monday and it's still
swollen and bruised.
I should have went to the Enduro where it was safe....<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Never been hurt riding? |

I've been pretty lucky injury wise. I did have a bad wreck on a uphill
triple that left me with a concussion and a bad bruised hip. Other than that
there was the time I broke a bone in my hand. The worst part of that was
when they removed the pin and didn't knock me out. Local anesthetic only
works on the skin, I could still feel the pin moving against the bone. There
was the one time I was riding down a slick hill and the rear slid out and
the peg got me right in the ankle joint. That one swelled up and turned some
funny colors. Two weeks later I was right back on it. That ankle has been
pretty weak ever since and I've reinjured it a few times since the original
injury. Besides those instances and a couple separated shoulders I've
managed to stay pretty healthy.

And I forgot that other concussion from when my brakes went out on me. It
was at an indoor race and I was brake sliding this one turn. Went into the
turn, reached for the brake to make the turn and nothing... but over the
berm and down on my side on concrete. Hit my head pretty hard and was quite
dazed.

Fred,
It's a mathematical formula, I=T/A, where "I" for Injury is proportional
to "T" which is Time spent riding, divided by "A" which is level of
Aggressiveness. Bottom line: If you ride hard enough, long enough, you
gonna have injuries!!!
