I'm looking to buy a used dirt bike. I am 5'9" and 190 lbs. What
size motor do you think I need (125cc, 150cc, 250cc, etc.). I will
mostly be riding on dirt roads and atv trails in the Allegeheny
National Forest in Pennsylvania. So I will be climbing some hills.

Thanks for any info!!!

Jeff Gurney

Hey thanks for replying guys. I'm a beginner rider. I'm not going to
be jumping much or racing. Just shootin' around PA riding easier
trails and dirt roads. And I'm not looking to spend too much.
Probably around $600 and I assume I would need to fix whatever I get
up a little.

Thanks!

$600, hmmm
older xr200/ xr250 comes to mind mid 1980's & up
make sure you have $ in there for a good helmet & goggles.
MX boots are a good thing for preventing leg breaks from
the top of the shin down. there is a lot of safety gear you
can buy but I would shop around for used stuff on every
thing but the helmet.
the trouble with <500 buck bikes is that they often have
minimal parts available... this is why I would stick to
a popular bike like the xr200, xr250, xr350, xr400, xr600
Honda has been making those for a long time and many of the parts
are interchangeable from year to year. look around for a junk yard
that has bikes. usually a used part is 1/2 the price of new.
for cheep bikes I like the KISS (keep it simple stupid) method
the less moving parts the better, because moving stuff wears and will break.
if all your looking for is something to get you into the woods & back
then reliable is the priority make sure the engine runs nice, a good
chain & sprockets, good brakes. if you want to go fast then get some
thing expensive, (newer) I like dirt bikes because they can take me places
I would not normally go. (I sure ain't walking up that mountain...) but
others buy them for other reasons.

Hey Thanks John! That's some good info. I'm going to look around for
the bikes you mentioned and see if I can dig anything up. I was
looking for a bike I can learn to work on as well as fix up, so those
would be pretty good.

Thanks again,
Jeff
