well i am out of the saddle till i recover from my carpal tunnel surgery. so
no caps in this post.

my wife has offered to buy me a xmas present and asked what i wanted. i
said i could use a new helmet.

aside from the normal fit issues , does anyone have a recommendation?

the helmet that spared my gulliver in the deer bashing wan an arai gtr. i
liked that one a lot, good fit, lightweight, and it did a great job of
keeping my brains in when the geezer hit the antlers.

but i am still open to ideas. schuberth, nolan, are two that come up in the
flip up category. but i am not sold on the flip up thing as it seems like
you give up some integrity for that feature.
thanks for any replies. happy holidaze to all who celebrate!

Jim:

Check out Scorpion Helmets

http://www.scorpionusa.com/home.html

I was an Arai wearer. My last helmet
was an RX7 Corsair. I was disappointed
by the way the internal pads worked,
the breath shield was not very effective,
and the visor hinges lost the ability to
hold the visor in partially open positions.
I expected way more for the premium price
of the Arai.

The Scorpion Solid 700 I now wear is more
comfortable than the Arai and works at
least as well. I paid about $100 less
for the Scorpion than the Arai at a
motorcycle dealer. You can get even better
deals on the web from a mail order company.

I have an Arai Quantum/e that fits well and has good ventilation, but
generates a lot of wind noise compared to the Shoei that preceded it.

That's worried me, too. And then I consider how often I'd actually use
this feature and lose all interest. Taking the helmet off and putting
it back on isn't _that_ much effort, and is usually my preference
anyway.

It's a bigger deal if you have to wear glasses. I use my full face
helmet only if it's extremely cold out. I know that others make
different risk decisions, and that's why the market continues to offer a
range of choices.

You don't wear glasses, then? I have to remove the glasses before
yanking a regular helmet off my head. It's annoying, which is why I like
the flip-up feature.

Actually, I do wear glasses. It took a bit of trying to find a frame
design that go easily through the lifted face shield, but one I got
them, no problem.

My hand's up to 95% after my accident last year. The human body is am
amazing thing. I turned my 4th metacarpal into dust, and yet here I am,
going to the gym just as I used to, only with occasional cramps in my hand.
And that at 44. My hat's off to the designer - so many things can go wrong
with our bodies, and yet they are amazingly resilient.

I think helmets truly depend on fit, and there are no general
recommedations. I have 3 favorites: an ancient Shoei Duotec as a flipper, an
Arai Renegade as an integral, and a BMW open face that is illegal in the US
but a fantastic city helmet. I love them for their fit. I wear glasses, to
the flip up feature -if properly designed for glasses- is very useful. I
need to wear different glasses with the integral helmet, since i need to
push them in.

None of these two are still on sale. Sad

Arai fit and craftmandship as well as their safety standard makes it a great
choice if you want to spend the premium. While I always wear earplugs on
rides longer than 20 minutes, the need to do so is even more prevalent with
Arai, I find for some reason.

> but i am still open to ideas. schuberth

Shubert is great - but heavy.

> nolan

Their flip up is my favorite other than the Duotec I own.

Tests are not quite conclusive on that, even though it is a very intuitive
argument. A German test in Motorrad somewhat morbidly concluded that your
corpse's face may look better with an integral helmet given the type of
accident it would take to destroy a flip-ups frontal area...

As someone that needs glasses -a need that is going to become even more
extreme given the fact I was just diagnosed with a cataract and require lens
replacement soon- I like flip-ups a lot. They allow me to keep my preferred
relatively flimsy, rimless titanium frames on as I put the helmet on. If I
didn't wear glasses I would not get the flip up feature.

Exactly. As my full face helmet has a locking mechanism similar to an
airline seatbelt, it would be even more convenient to take on and off
than the usual D-ring type if glasses weren't the issue.

On the subject of glasses and cataracts: I've been slowly developing
them and my ophthamologist's opinion is that I can wait until Medicare
to deal with them, but also that he wouldn't bother with Lasik surgery
since the lenses would have to be replaced in a couple of years anyway.
A friend of mine recently had Lasik done so that one eye is optimum
for reading and the other for distance. He never has to wear glasses
and I guess the price for that is binocular vision. OTOH, he doesn't
ride. Anyone here have experience riding without binocular vision? Is
it an impairment, and if so, how serious?

I hear that a lot. I actually liked the flip up because the eye
port was larger, making for better peripheral vision. Then I found
the Arai XD with an even larger eye port. Taking glasses off and
putting them on doesn't bother me. I do that anyway, switching from
my normal glasses to polycarb sun glasses when I get on the bike.

i wish i could claim the same progress, unfortunately i am already
developing some osteo-arthritis in my wrist. ouch.
so i am becoming more of a left hand dominant person. that was part of the
reason i went in to have the cts release, before i lost the median nerve
completely.
i can stll ride just fine though. interesting how little wrist twisting is
actually involved in riding. but my guitar playing was starting to suffer
badly enough to warrant a few repairs.
i did pass on a nice 916 a few weeks back though, even with higher bars it
was a real chore to stay comfortable. after ten minutes on board , i was
screamining for more advil.
my r1 found a great home, so i have the cash riding in my e-trade acct.
waiting for the right bike to jump up and say "me, me!
using a few different hemets is a thought, but i just need one for everyday,
commuting on the rs, and for whatever the new bike will be

I drove for a couple of days with one eye out of service once -- I
found the loss of peripheral vision on that side to be annoying, but
being aware of it, I could compensate. That part of depth perception
based on binocular vision drops rapidly to almost nothing at the
typical distances between moving vehicles, and I didn't notice the
loss of it.

I've always been left-hand dominant. It ain't so bad.

The osteo-arthritis stuff is no fun. I've had it in my right thumb, and
it ultimately cleared up (mostly). Took a matter of months, but perhaps
there is some light at the end of the carpal tunnel.

I've recently been plagued with shoulder pains, and what seems to be
working is (generic) Aspercreme to lower the pain level, and
chiropractic to help put the parts back in place. Don't know if any of
that will help you, but I'll throw in my wishes for a speedy and full
recovery.

As one gains chronological advantage (and I'm @ Medicare-1), it becomes
increasingly true that the three most important things about a
motorcycle are: ergonomics, ergonomics, and ergonomics. My left wrist
used to get sore and the left hand numb on my old Virago. Tne new bikes
don't seem to have that problem.
