Post subject: New helmet arrived yesterday, need advice
Archived from groups: rec>motorcycles (more info?)

Yesterday I got in the mail a HJC CL-14 XL helmet. I measured my head to
the manuf. specs before ordering and the helmet DOES fit my head nicely,
snug but not too tight. However, its extremely tight in the cheeks and it
is a bit difficult to take on and off. Is going up a size to XXL a bad
idea? Do you think that the XXL would be too loose if an XL is snug on my
head?

What do you think?

THANKS!

I think this is why I buy helmets in person, from a local dealer.

I think that if you go to XXL it will be too loose to provide proper
impact protection IMHO. IIRC the padding in the facial and cheek area is
much lower density and should "break-in" to a certain extent over time.
Best of luck.

As helmets are supposed to be snug (some say a new helmet should give
you a minor ache or two for the first month), do not trade for one
that is too loose for your head. If you have wide cheeks but all else
fits well, try trimming the foam inside the cheek pads a bit.

Also ... the cheek pads may compress on their own after a few weeks of
usage, and no trimming would be necessary. Helmets do conform to the
head after usage.

Keep the snug one.

I just bought an HJC AC3 helmet. It's one of the few 3/4 helmets that are
SNELL rated, which was a big drawing point for me.

Now, I have 6 helmets, including this new one, and 5 of them are XXL and fit
perfectly. The XXL in the new HJC was too big, so I have an XL size in that
helmet only. And yes, the cheeks are tight, and it's a squeeze to get 'er on
and off, but once it's on, it fits just like a glove. The sales girl, who is
also in my MC club, says the HJC's are about a size too big so you have to
drop a size for the right fit.

But, you ride a motorcycle. Do what you want!

Im going down to the local cycle shop to try on a Shoei RF-1000 today. If I
like the fit better I am just going to return the HJC and get the Shoei. I
was trying to save money but along with the fitting issues, several of my
friends have strongly recommended the Shoei.

Otherwise, I am going with the recomendations of the folks here and keeping
the snug one. If I get sick of it, oh well, at least I will have a spare
helmet!

<g> My current helmet is approaching the end of its five-year life
span, so I'll be doing this again soon meself. This one gave me a
pretty sharp little pain up by the left hairline for about six weeks
or so. After that, it fit perfectly ever since.

Oh, another trick. Find the pressure spot and roll a baseball around
on it for awhile. Hardball, not softball.

It is unbelievable the sizes of helmets my local dealer carries! XXS, S, M
and maybe a L. I want to know who they are selling helmets to! I figure if
a helmet has to be ordered, it may as well be me doing the ordering for a
good internet price. I went to a dealer today where I had never looked at
helmets, they had 1 XL in the store, it was a Shoei RF1000 in the wrong
color. I couldn't pass the oportunity to try it on to see how well it fit.
It was the same as the HJC though maybe a little better in the cheeks. I
also noticed it didn't seem any lighter than my HJC. I was expecting Shoei
to be a super helmet way better than my cheapy $145 helmet.

Im gonna stick with the HJC XL for a while and see how it goes. It may end
up on ebay or as a spare.

The different manufacturers will be different sizes with the same
labels. I missed out on a great deal on Suomi helmets, because their
XL were too small for me. The KGV XL fits just fine.

I'm sure after a few hours in the saddle, your helmet will feel
better. All of my helmets that I've found most comfortable over the
years have started off just as you described (overall snug, and
particularly tight in the cheeks). But if it doesn't break in just
right, does HJC have differently-sized cheekpads available? I know
that my Arai has the option of thinner or thicker pads, but I've
fortunately never needed them.

I came off Arai helmets onto HJC. Arai and Shoei are overpriced pieces
of Jap crap if you ask me. The AC-11 is the HJC you want, it has a
composite shell. The CL is a resin shell.

My HJC fit a little tight at first too and I thought about stepping up
a size. After a week's use it loosened up and conformed perfectly.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
