More specifically, I hate rain. At 9 I sat down to watch Pay Per Squid
on DirecTV. As soon as the disclaimer saying not to do any of the crap
they were about to show me was over it started POURING rain and the
satellite went out. Naturally. It just came back on and what do I get
to watch? The credits. Bastards.

I hate Texas.

Go get yourself a 1 meter dish with a KU band LNA. Connect that bad boy up
to your DirecTV. No more signal loss in the rain. Or even better, find an
old 3 Meter Paraclipse or something

Head over to news:alt.video.satellite.dbs . You shouldn't be losing signal
that bad. You might find a re-alignment will fix most of your issues and
minimize downtime. A home satellite setup is only as good as it's
installation.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Look at a chart of attenuation vs Frequency in water vapor. Why do you
think they use X-Band (8-12GHz) for friggin' weather radars;) The
mini-dishes are 12.3-12.7GHz as I recall. BIg thunderstorms would always
kill mine for up to 20 minutes, when passing to the South. I would
imagine Texas has BIGGER T-Srorms than Az, if you catch my drift. BTW,
it's the height & water density that kills the signal. West coast mega
fronts are not dense enough to Kill DTV.

And while Texas and Az have less slant range and are closer to the
equator, it's still density of the storm being the dominate factor for
attenuation of the Microwave energy.

Come over to West Texas. We CAN'T get enough rain here. Actually, we're
above normal for the year now (got 7 inches in June), but half of our lakes
are still nearly dry. We're in the 6th year of drought out here in
Abilene.....

I hate Kansas. I can see no reason for KS to exist. It is a vast boring
land separating lotsa good states. Imagine being able to travel from
Missouri to Colorado without having to go thru KS - woohoo! Not only is it
a very boring state, but the speed limits are very conservative, and the KHP
is out to make a buck.

Oklahoma is not a very good state for traveling through, either...... they
have conservative speed limits and small towns you have to slow up for about
every 10 - 15 miles. You come cruising into town and a sign says "reduced
speed limit ahead", then about 500 feet down the road another sign says
"Speed Limit 30", as if you had lotsa warning - at least their cops aren't
quite so quick to stop you as KS cops are (they've nothing better to do).
OK must have lotsa old folks driving the roads, the way their speed limits
are....

Now that I've taken this thread completely off-topic, I'll return you to
your regular programming (assuming it is not storming where you are)........<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Wow! Someone from Texas dissing other states for being vast and boring?
Now that's the pot calling the kettle black. The worst part is by the time
you get somewhere, you're still in Texas! Smile

I find there is more than enough room in the town for everyone.... the yuppies, hippies,
hillbilly locals that wish everything would go back to 20 years ago, nerdy types, etc etc.

Used to have that, but it would go out every time it rained, too.
Actually more often than the satellite. And it cost $20/mo. more than
we pay for DTV. Cable didn't even come with a nifty dish Wink

I used to live in Wyoming and we have land in Montana. The only reason
I'm still here is that my wife and snow don't get along.

I got it dead on, or at least as close as sanity would allow, and in
clear weather we get around 95 on the signal strength meter. It's just
because of the insane storms we tend to get around here. Zero to
torential rains of biblical proportions in 5 minutes.

Some parts of town got 2" of rain in an hour yesterday. That would
wash Pheonix down the nearest dry river bed Wink

Ouch. Sounds like you're near the point where the ground will suck up
water like a sponge and into the part where a 15 minute shower floods
half the city. Pretty much the same thing happened here earlier this
year. It had been mainly dry for months, then it started pouring all
of a sudden. In 20 minutes we had 2' of water in the ditch (no
gutters, I'm in the sticks) and the back yard looked like Louisiana.

I can. I was born there when my dad was a test pilot for Cessna Wink
