I'm about to split the case on my 83 XR100 to install a new
countershaft, and I need to have the bike reassembled and running in
about three days. My local parts place can't get a gasket set for at
least a week, so I'm wondering if it'd be utterly blasphemous to use
that gasket-goo-in-a-tube stuff in place of real Honda gaskets. Will it
even work properly? It'd suck to rush it and have to take the whole
engine apart again in two weeks to put in real gaskets when the goo
stuff fails miserably.

Should I just bear it and wait or go ahead an use the gasket goo?

Cheers,

Isaac

Wait for the gaskets- the "gasket goo" WILL seal the cases perfectly,
however the cases will then be .015"- .020" closer together (gasket
thickness) and you will more than likely experience a binding condition in
the transmission shafts and crankshaft.
Where are you located? You should be able to get a Vesrah complete gasket
set for that bike in one day most anyplace in the lower 48 U.S.states.

If you skip the gasket, at the very least use Suzuki bond, or the
equivalent product from Yamaha, Yamabond.

The "Goo in a tube" Permatex "Ultra Copper" and "Ultra Black" is good
stuff, but is not a case gasket substitute.

Or, make your own gaskets. It shouldn't take more than an hour or
so. Any automotive place will sell sheets of gasket paper in varying
thickness. I'd get the right thickness & coat with permatex silicone
gasket sealer.

If you can get the old gasket off intact, use it to trace onto the new
gasket paper. If it's not intact, lay the cases onto the paper &
trace the outline. For the bolt holes, lay the paper on the cases,
put a steel ball on hole, & tap lightly with a hammer. The sharp
hole edges will cut hole in the paper. Tapping around with a small
ball peen hammer can also cut the inside edges, or eyeball the
width & cut with scissors.

I always carry a couple sheets of gasket paper on extended
riding trips. It has also saved the day with I quickly need a gasket
& can't wait for one.

I'm in Nova Scotia, in Canada. I'll call a few local bike shops and see
if they have any/can get any. Who knows, the dealer might oddly have a
gasket set in stock Smile

And I though I carried enough shit to build a bike from scratch out of old
trash I find laying around the woods.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I've got two large plastic bins with misc parts & tools that I take
on long trips. The sheets of gasket paper go into a paper grocery
bag on the bottom of the bin.

Remind me to tell you about the time we fabricated a replacement
brake line from a chunk of femoral artery...

Shitty to be stuck inside today doing cleaning & finances. I think
I'll go out for a MTB ride. Do a couple of Dam hills.

Good thing you stopped there Jerry. Don't make me put on
the latex gloves again.

When do you want to ride? I think our club's Taylor Park ride is the
same weekend as ISF. I wouldn't mind doing Taylor in early
September. After our last trip I fashioned a repair kit for brake lines.
Never could get it to work well, so I scrapped it.
