mean that), everytime I notice who gets it seemed to be a sportsman
but there ya go - if you'd have asked me I'd have said Lleyton got it
last year or the year before ...

Let me explain for you John.
Young Australians can either be sports people or they can make coffee
and work in Maccas.

It might just be that the sporting winners tend to get more publicity
for these awards...

Maybe you're just getting confused with "Australian Of The Year award"
or as it is otherwise known... "captain of the Australian cricket team".
Though whether or not Ponting continues the tradition or not is
another matter.. given his behaviour in the early part of his cricket
career.

huh ? Besides you not knowing what Casey Stoner's name is... since when
do people go 'looking for' a role model. I'd have thought that would
have been a passive activity, rather than an active one.

Well there was last year, Tania Major who is listed as an Indigenous
youth advocate
2006 it was Trisha Broadbridge, she's a Youth Leader, whatever that
means
2005 was a bloke named Khoa Do who makes films.
2004 was Hugh Evans, who founded a charity mob called the Oak Tree
Foundation.
So yeah, all bloody sports people.

Turn on your tv on any Sunday afternoon in this country and look for the
channel that isn't showing sport. That is why the sportspeople always get the
gong.
