How sure are you that no one could find out your real name and where
you live (e.g. by contacting Bob Nixon or someone else) and spoiling
your little games, old man?

Uh, the "Native Americans" are also "refugees". They came in before
there was written history so we don't really know a whole lot about
what they were seeking refuge _from_. Presumably some other kind of
refugee that was running from some other kind of refugee that was
running from . . . until you get back to Africa, where the natives
were holding onto the place and running all the inferior types out.

In some ways. The trouble with those religious crazies was that one
tenet of their religion was that workaholism was virtuous. So work,
work, work, tote that barge, lift that bale, build that mill, produce,
produce, produce. And it worked really well. Then it turned out that
the Japanese were even bigger workaholics than the Puritans . . .

Actually, the penal colony at Botany Bay became important only after
it was no longer possible to transport criminals to America:

The best known transporter of the day was a man named James Oglethorpe. His
name appears in most history books. Er, at most, he transported only EIGHT
convicts from England.

Thought you'd like to know....

Street Glide will make a bazillion hp instead of a paltry 97?

How much did it cost you to modify the Street Glide to put out less hp

What are Harley numbers? The numbers from my 103 ci Street Glide as
recorded on a dyno?

My Street Glide makes 97 rwhp as measured on the dyno. Those aren't
Harley numbers. When it was stock it made 61 rwhp, measured on the
dyno. That's not a Harley number, either. Harley doesn't quote
horsepower numbers, just torque. And afaik, their published torque
figures are, in general, closer to what actual measured customer bike
results demonstrate than those of most other manufacturers.

When my bike was built, Harley claimed:

Engine Torque (per SAE J607)6:
North America 86 ft. lbs. @ 3500 rpm (117 NM @ 3500 rpm)

Notice that there was no published horsepower figure. I don't know
what the SAE J607 standard is, but that measurement is very unlikely
to be taken at the rear wheel. Few (if any) motorcycle manufacturers
publish rear wheel horsepower or torque figures. They generally
measure power output at the crank, without any power-robbing
accessories included.

My bike actually produced 72 ft-lbs of torque when stock; it generates
107 ft-lbs now.

On the dyno.

Yes, usually when one measures horsepower at the crank, the loss of
power in transmission, through the transmission itself, and through
the final drive, and through spinning the rear wheel and tire
assembly, are not counted. Also, the energy required to spin the
alternator, and belt-driven oxygen pumps, and any other engine driven
devices (more prevalent on cars, such as power steering pumps, air
conditioning compressors, etc) is not factored in.

But, that's not a Harley-Davidson phenomenon. That's simply a choice
made by manufacturers when they publish power figures. And most of
them - to my knowledge and experience - choose to publish crank
figures, not rear wheel horsepower figures.
