I've always loved the sound of the ST4s, and I'm not much into Ducati's. My
Beemer friend who we met in unfortunate circumstances on the Putty had an
ST4. He said he had a major service on it which cost $1500, and sold it to
buy the Beemer soon after.
He may have been stretching the story to fill in the time, but it would be
worth looking into how much they cost to service before you buy one.
I've heard that the newer Vtec VFRs have a big power boost when the valves
open about 7000rpm, which can take a bit of getting used to. I haven't
ridden one, but it is something to check out if you're looking at buying
one.
Jen's 98 VFR did the Tassie trip with ease, although 800kms as a pillion in
pissing rain is not an experience I want to revisit.

Don't be silly. You're obviously thinking of the V3R and V5R.

VFR800 or a VTR1000 ... two different bikes, both Honda. Probably both go
faster in red too. There are rumours of a VFR1000 being produced at some
stage, but it's not confirmed yet.

Does anyone actually pay $80/hour!?
Hmmmm, say 35 chargeable hours weekly @$80, by say three mechanics, deduct
rent and other overheads, add margin on oil, rags, filters, rags,
sparkplugs, rags,..........I reckon I could pay good mechanics $1,500 a week
each and retire reasonably young at those charge-out rates, and there would
be the bonus of swiping the stash out of the crannies in the fairings.

I too looked at the ST4, VTR1000 and VFR800 (01 model). I ended up
getting the VFR as it was not as harsh on fuel and ride position as the
VTR and cheaper than the price of the ST4. I am very pleased as it is a
really nice bike. My last bike was a 92 ZZR1100 some years ago so the
VFR is far more nimble - plus the nice v-four engine! Take the VFR out
for a ride, you will not be dissapointed
