Read about some poor guy that got flattened the other day, had a head on
with a van a decided to drop it "like an expert rider" in a vein attempt to
minmise damage. Alas it didn't help and he never survived.

What is the official verdict on purposely dropping your bike in an expected
collision?
I can't imagine it can ever be good. Is this really considered a good
tactic? Flying through the air or smashing into the side of a car seems like
a less worse option than being ground into the asphalt and possibly
underneath it as it mashes you into a million pieces.
Any experts care to shed some light on this topic?

I'm no expert, but your brakes don't work very well when your sliding
down the road. Assuming your going to fast to stop, either way you are
going to hit the object and I personally rather slow down and go over it
than hit it and stop at full speed. I've seen a few guys hit cars and
walk away after going over the top!

Rubber is far better at slowing you down than metal and plastic is.
Keep the rubber on the ground and use proper braking (squeeze on) to
control deceleration. Also, the countersteer whilst braking is a vital
skill to master.

Ive had 2 T - bones , one in Brisbane and got knocked out and a couple of
broken bones , flew over the boot of the car . Second was at a roundabout ,
my fault did not realise that they had built one there and T boned a
commodore , went over the boot and again got knocked out .

I wont mention racing accidents.

I always try to save / avoid right till the final impact . Quickly working
out options even when clearly stuffed is always the go .Thats called
survival instincts.

If he didn't survive how do they know "he decided to drop it like an expert
rider" and not that he panic-braked and lost it?

This is true!
I couldn't count the number of times I've thought "I'm gone here" but
through luck, skill, reflexes or for no discernible reason I've saved it.
Never stop trying. (Remember the footage of Doohan refusing to give up at
his corner)

Al.. you're pushing some fairly conflicting and unpleasant images into my
head you know!

How would you like it if I made similar out-of-context lewd suggestions
about your... ummm.... fox terriers!!

Ask Clem, he is the only one I know who has dropped it enough to qualify as
an expert.

I could concede that if a Semi trailer with a whopping great container
pulled out across the road in front of me, I could probably drop it,
slide underneath the trailer, remount, swear at the truckie in a way
that would make a wharfie blush and ride off. Alternately, I could
expertly smear myself over the container in much the same way a bug
hits my visor. Alterntaely, I could use my brakes and stop before the
truck....... I'm undecided. I think I need a pre-planned response.

You know, I think I'll just get straight on the brakes. I mightn't stop
in time, but of all the alternatives, that's the one which I'll hit
going slowest.
