Hey all, new guy here.
I've got a quick question about leather jackets. I've recently gotten my first motorcycle and I want to have good riding gear. So far all I've gotten is a helmet.
I've had my eye on an Icon leather jacket. Are they a good brand, or should I be looking elsewhere?
Thanks in advance everyone.

Yeppers. It is always good to be able to see out of your jacket.
Collar height is probably the least publicized jacket fitting issue!

Reviews of all sorts of bike gear here:
http://www.webbikeworld.com/
This is a seller's site but it has customer reviews:
http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/
Mesh type jackets and such are also available for hot weather. Some
have padding in the important places. One advantage to them is color
choice. I have a yellow First Gear jacket.
Being seen on a bike is important. Cagers are looking out for other
cages, not bikers usually. Bikers lose the battle.
You might want to look at lighting suggestions at the first site.

Good thinking.

They are the trendiest thing out there full of skulls and other evil
looking designs.
I've examined them at the bike shop and they seem about as well made as
anything else. My only question is, why on earth do you want a heavy,
poorly ventilated jacket in Phoenix of all places? Synthetic materials
are much lighter, better ventilated, more than likely better padded, and
even waterproof on the odd chance you get caught out in the rain. They
are also a whole lot cheaper. >> Stay informed about: Hello all... |

Jacket:
I got a heavy grey nylon (or something) jacket with some padding/armor at
the Harley dealership for just under $300. It says Harley-Davidson on it
(and people ask me about that when I consistently ride a Honda and a
Suzuki). Anyway, the thing is rather well built, and it also contains
reflectors, including the large Harley words on the back. It is very
visible at night.
I don't know how it will do in a serious slide, but I did take a minor spill
and the way it behaved suggests it would do well.
<BEGIN IMPORTANT POINT>
Anyway, when you buy a jacket, don't rule out the ballistic nylon in favor
of leather immediately, and don't forget about visibility and reflectors.
<END IMPORTANT POINT>
I'm seen some good riding jackets online (Joe Rocket, I think) that had
reflectors.
Boots:
I also had good luck at the Harley dealership for boots with zippers in the
side.
Gloves:
I got some Teknic gloves similar to these:
http://www.ridersdiscount.com/street-gear/gloves-men/29799.php
I like them. I like the longer gloves because sometimes it gets kind of
cool in these parts (Michigan).
Final Advice: Don't forget about visibility in a jacket.
Dave. >> Stay informed about: Hello all... |

What I meant by "visibility" was that drivers can see you (on mine, the
reflector stuff really shows up at night).
I've never encountered a jacket where the collar interfered with me seeing
.... but then again I'm very inexperienced. >> Stay informed about: Hello all... |

I can't really help you with your question, but I can add one of my own.
I'm going to be buying some riding gear before long myself and I will be
needing a Jacket too. I will probably need some good boots as well. My
old ones are a bit worn, but I will probably stick with the same brand,
Sidi (http://www.motonation.com/sidihome.asp). I've been happy with the
once I own.
I do have a bit of a special requirement. I'm a vegetarian. I don't eat
meat and I try not to use animal products that come from the dead animal
(actually, I've tried unsuccessfully giving up all animal products, but I
just like milk and cheese too much). I'm not religious about it. If
leather is really the best way to go, I'll hold my nose and use leather.
I have leather belts, a leather wallet, leather boots (that I make last a
really, really long time), but if possible I would like to stay away from
leather as much as possible.
Does anyone have any recommendations for riding gear based on this
requirement?
Thanks.
Also, good luck to the new guy! I'm new in this group also.

http://www.motoxoutlet.com/ isn't a bad outlet either. Moto GP or Joe
Rocket for textile jackets. If you're gonna go whole hog, Aerostich at
www.aerostich.com is the place. They're not cheap, but you do get your
money's worth over the next 10+ years of use. I just picked up a pair
of Sidi's outlet boots under the brand name of Setup from New Enough
myself. $69, but it pays to have small feet. >> Stay informed about: Hello all... |

I own and would recommend Tourmaster, Firstgear, and Joe Rocket
products, though there are a number of high quality mfgs out there. >> Stay informed about: Hello all... |

Yes, Icon makes some decent stuff, but you don't mention which model jacket.
Make sure it has CE armor in it. Also, don't forget protective pants too.
