hello, a friend of mine has this 1988 gsxr 750 and it won't start
the cycle shop said it would cost $600.00 to fix it so he took it home.
supposedly it was the cdi ? he put the part in then it had spark but his
battery went dead and so he jumped it with his car. now he says he has no
spark. I'm going to school to be an industrial electrician and i work on all
my cars and bikes.
Can some one tell me what steps to take to troubleshoot this bike . he
really needs the help and can't afford to take it in, he's recently divorced
with kids, so i'm trying to help him.i 'm not familiar with this bike,i used
to race dirt bikes . thanks for any input or help in this matter.

Buy a factory service manual. It won't tell you everything you need
to know, but it's the best source of information available. Get a good
voltmeter with probes that can pierce insulation if necessary. Make sure
you have power and ground at the ignition module, make sure the crank
position indicator is producing the rated signal _at_ the ignition unit.

The Electrosport website has a very well-thought-out fault-finding
guide. It's oriented to charging problems, but the preamble is a
good introduction to first principles for motorcycles

Good luck,

Of course, there could possibly be other stuff wrong too.... how long
did it sit without being run? Before you change the battery, I would check
for compression first... If the compression is within 10 of each other, then
you should be ok... that will also tell you that you don't have to do any
head work of any kind, so your (other) repair work will be kept to a
minimum. Then I would do a complete tune up and replace the battery. If it
still doesn't start and you have spark, you most likely will have to rebuild
your carbs.

Good Luck...

hello, I just was over by friends house and he had a Clymer repair manual
for his GSXR 750. we checked the coils that the plug wires come out of and
they had the correct resistance according to the book. we also checked the
signal generator and that ohmed out ok also. it didn't show the pulsar coils
in the book. when he put the fully charged battery in the bike we also
checked each plug wire with plug in it for spark and got nothing on all of
them. is there any way of checking out the igniter box other than taking it
to the dealer? thanks Randy

does anyone have the exact instructions for testing the ignitor box with a
1.5v battery, for a 1988 GSXR. my friends Clymer book for this bike does not
have it in there. it does have a wiring diagram in the back of the book and
shows the ignitor box but how and what do i hook up the battery to and is
the key on and are the plugs still connected into the ignitor box? What
exactly does this test do?
so far we know by testing resistance on the signal generator and the coils
for the plugs that these are ok. We also put 12v across the coils and did
get spark directly from the battery.
i still think its leaning towards this box being bad ,but for the cost of
replacement we need to be sure. thanks for any help or info Randy
