Can anyone out here tell me if such an animal exists as a parts cross
reference type book for motorcycles? i.e. a book that shows the sealed rear
wheel bearings from a 1987 Ninja 900 will also fit a GSXR750 etc? I am
working on a project that's using different components of several different
model Kawy's and we don't have the luxury of a large box type motorcycle
store here, so I am unable to just browse through parts bins to match stuff
up buykawasaki.com lists parts numbers, but doesn't give the specs on the
parts, so its hit and miss if that part number was changed by one digit for
ease of identification or if its actually a different part entirely.

thanks in advance!

  For any caged ball or roller bearings, you can go to a bearing
supply house or a competent auto parts store. Give them the numbers
(including suffix letters, etc) off the old bearing, and they should
be able to match it.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

thanks for the reply thefly, but I'm still wondering about the existence of
such a book? I have seen ebayers wording their ad's as " should fit blah
years to blah years " according to the cross reference book. however, each
time I've sent an email asking about where I could get such a book, no
replies, so does it exist?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

AFAIK, no such thing exists. Usually, when a person says part fits years
xx-yy, it is because: 1. there were no significant model changes in this
period. 2. The part is labelled or listed in such a way that when one
orders it from the dealer, you find out this information. 3. Someone
else told them this.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

You can buy a microfiche set that lists all Kawasaki parts and which model used
them. If you have the Kawasaki part number all you do is put the fiche in the
reader, look up the part number and every Kawasaki that uses that particular
part is listed. Comes in handy. If you want a set order here. Look for "model
application guide".
