My friend and I were both riding our bikes yesterday in Dallas when we
saw a guy on a plastic deep blue crotch-rocket rice burner on a on-ramp,
attempting to enter north bound traffic on I-35. The highway traffic was
heavy, and speeds were about 50. The crotch-rocket was clearly trying
to make others yield to him, as he wasnt about to give way to any 4
wheeled vehicles. He lost. Actually, he chickened out about 6 inches
to a foot away from a truck and lost control. I saw him and the bike go
down, with him doing 5 somer saults on I-35 at about 40mph. The bike
just slid on its side. Traffic halted suddenly, and everyone started
locking their brakes, not wanting to run over him or his bike. We were
3 car lengths behind, and we heard a van lock his brakes up immediately
behind us, almost hitting us in the process.
I observed the guy get up pretty quickly, take his helmet off, throw it
about 50ft, and then took off what was left of his muscle shirt. THEN,
he started kicking the guard-rail, leaving his bike in the lane. My
friend and I drove our bikes up to him and I picked his bike up out of
the street and moved it out of traffic. Amazingly it was still running.
When I walked up to the guy, he must have been 22 at the most, and his
back and arms looked like someone took a belt sander to him. Also, he
had one of his nipple pierced that didnt look like it could hold a
piercing anymore. His nipple was now forked like a snake's tongue.
We asked him if he was alright and if he needed to use a cell phone.
He said he was fine, so we left him there on the side of I-35 in 100
degree heat with his broken bike and one remaining nipple.

MORAL?
Just like rock-paper-scissors, Trucks beat cars, cars beat cycles.
Except that cycles dont beat anything.
Watching this unfold really hit home to me, as I am a new rider. I have
an 8 week old 2003 FLSTC that I have put 2100 miles on it. This is my
first bike and I still need practice and confidence. But not enough
confidence to take on a truck or other 4 wheeled vehicle. >> Stay informed about: Saw a crash today |

Just a word from an old Medic. Chances are good that he's okay, expecially
considering his age and rage, but quite often shock hits minutes later as
the pain kicks in, and shock is the worst medical emergency. It's a good
idea to have someone with him until an ambulance shows up.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Saw a crash today |

me being a month old newbie as well, i read different crash stories to help
slap me upside the head as a reminder i am on a bike; with slim chances of
winning; and always pay attention.....

Actually, each can be a winning "hand." In the case of the cycle,
winning is staying out of the fray. He lost. Fighting with the big
guys is a sure way to lose.

I ride with the 'tude that I'm gonna lose every tie. So far, it's
only happened once, and I lost... but at least she had insurance.

i think watching something like that should hit home with _any_ rider.
hopefully he is not only aware of the danger he put himself in, but the
dangers that he put everyone else around him in. sad part, he probably
blames everyone _but_ himself and learned nothing.
<sigh>.....like you said......rock, paper, nothing.

This is why I never feel like a poosah, even tho I ride like one.
I give a healthy distance from all the metal around me.
Want in front of me? Please do.
I just hope I got my major crashes out of me while I was young. Hopefully
this guy will too.

And you didn't call the cops/medic/911, let alone stick around anyway?

I disagree about calling 911. When I went down some years ago, I did
*not* need emergency treatment. Some dickwad cager took it upon
themselves to call 911. When they showed up, I told 'em I didn't need
'em. Then the county / state sent me a bill for some $130 or
something. I stiffed 'em (told 'em to go collect from the person who
called 'em) but they insisted to the end that I owed it. Probly on m'
credit report to this day. <g>

I'm still getting bills from the SF Ambulance people for that little
mishap I had out there. Never called them, never rode in the
ambulance. They are persistent.
