My 83 YZ490 has quite a bit of spooge in the pipe. It is an aftermarket
DG pipe and I would prefer to clean it out rather than pony up $160 for
a new one. Should I burn it out with a torch? Slosh some gasoline
around in it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
On a side note, I am having no luck trying to find a new or used
original capacity fuel tank for this bike. All I have been able to find
are desert tanks.
Thanks,
Bret >> Stay informed about: Need to clean out the pipe |

I'll check the local bone yard this afternoon <he hard a few
80,81,82's last year> I'm not sure what's left on them
john
BTW a 490 is not a tea toddling drinker, desert tanks are
not that unreasonable

do this, for carbon build up & sludge in trials bikes, our bikes dont have
the huge expansion chamber the racers do so the drill & speedo cable thing
and amount of 'mixture' would be different...
fill with a solution of brake fluid 75 % used DOT 3 brake fluid and 25%
water. Pour this in the pipe and tape the ends
with duct tape to seal it. Move the pipe around so that all the carbon
deposits are coated by the brake fluid, which will loosen it. Let this sit
overnight.
Get a length of small woven steel cable (an old car speedometer cable is
perfect) that is long enough to reach just past the center of the pipe. Fray
one end (the more the better) and chuck this in a 1/4 inch drill that has a
variable speed so it won't turn too fast. Use the cable to scrub the inside
of the pipe from both ends which will take out the carbon loosened by the
brake fluid. Be very careful while doing this and wear protective goggles,
gloves and clothing and don't pull the cable out while it is turning as it
will flail around. The ends of the pipe can be cleaned with an abrasive flap
wheel (60 grit) obtained from a hardware store. The pipe can then be flushed
out with solvent or brake cleaner.

I'd just use a propane or oxygen/acetelyne torch (careful on the temp
if you use O/A, use a rosette tip if you have one).
Get it good and hot, it will burn the spooge to carbon which you can
then loosen with the above "cable or wire on a drill motor" method. Be
careful how and where you do it, it *WILL* smoke and belch flames from
the ends. When it stops smoking, you're done.
When you are finished, clean the outside, sand lightly, paint with
high temp header paint.

Just make sure you don't slosh gasoline around in it and THEN use
the torch ;->
(Besides, torches are for welding)

Heat the pipe red hot, either with a torch or a campfire. Then gently
tap the pipe with a rubber hammer and blow it out with compressed air.
Are you calling 3.9 gallons a desert tank?

Cool suggestion Jim.. Maybe the old combustion chamber water
trick can be adapted to this too... heat on a campfire and then
shoot some water in.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Need to clean out the pipe |

490 ;->

Thanks John. I was just thinking about running a smaller tank for AHRMA
events.

I guess "desert tank" was a poor choice of words. It is larger than the oem tank. I just wanted to have an
original style tank for the bike in addition to the larger Clarke tank that is on it.
