There's a company in Israel that manufactures two versions of this
device.

One version is smaller and, as I recall, it has a range of about 25~50
feet and it sends out a signal that tricks a cell phone into thinking
it isn't getting any signal so it hangs up.

The larger version is suitcase-sized and it has a longer range. It is
designed to protect public buildings against bombs triggered by cell
phones.

And both will have the result of people LOOKING at their phones,
fumbling with them to dial out again after staring at the signal meter
for 5-8 seconds, increasing the distraction level.

Oh, and not only are jammers illegal, just about any one you can buy
only jams analog signals which just so happened to have been shut off
permanently by the carriers last week.

What you really need is a mil-spec ecm pod that fits in a tank bag.
Kill or fuzz out everything within 1mile. ;^) Then again you might
have to start looking out for men with guns that have unrecognizable
acronyms on their windbreakers...kill joys.

Me I'd LOVE to have one and cruise down the road watching cars, cell
phones and such just quit working. Permantly I hope.

Like Morpheus had on the _Nebuchadnezzar_?

Sounds like a fun idea but it could backfire. Some bimbo cager on her
cell, it goes dead; she starts fumbling around for buttons to press
whilst looking at it (instead of the road)...

They're already out there.

A friend of mine told me about riding through the Panamint Valley and
observing two Navy F/A-18s crossing the road at low altitude far ahead of
him. He happened to glance down at his handlebar-mounted GPS and discovered
it was not working, but didn't put two and two together until the jets
crossed a ridge and disappeared while at the same time his GPS came back to
life.

What? Like that doesn't happen all the time anyway? Sheesh what
electronic nirvana do you live in? A dead cell phone is less of a
problem than a suddenly dead car with nothing working. The fly-by-wire
cars would be the funniest...silly wabbit you got no control. I think
the resulting chaos would a cacaphony of glee. The twisted burning
wreckage, confused looks the bewilderment, people having to have
actual people instead of a damned cell phone.

If that makes me evyl, so be it. I place cars second only to pigeons
on the "Expedite Extermination With Extreme Prejudice" list.

No, you'd just have to watch out for the FCC. I suspect that the fine
would cost you a LOT of bikes.

I did some research a year or so ago and figured that the power consumption
was too high for a 100 yard + range from a bike. I also agree with
Polarhound that it would probably increase the danger as people would divert
even more attention to the dead phone. Still, I would like some kind of EMP
device to nuke non-points ignitions.

Maybe, maybe not. First they have to figure out where it is and mobile
tx are not as easy to find as people think.

Not that you don't have a valid point.

Gee, I was thinking more along the line of "Wild Weasel" type. 8^) But
you are correct about power, maybe once gore the whore and his ilk win
I'll have a fusion powered motorcycle that will have the spare
amperage to handle ECM and EMP. Oh the joy that I'd find.

I disagree, if the whole car/phone etc goes down they just coast to an
ignomious stop. No worries anyways as they are behind you.

It's moving, it's on for maybe 10 seconds, and it's in traffic. How
does anyone know where the signal came from? How does anyone figure
out it was a jammer? Even if the FCC cops are looking for a xmttr, how
would they find you (unless you're out in the middle of nowhere with
zero traffic?)

OK, so looking at it rationally, I'd be using the thing a lot, mebbe
45 minutes a day.

AN/PRD-12 or 13, DF and triangulate in < 1 second. Google it.

So they can find out where you _were_ in 1 second. Unless you
leave the jammer on all the time or they have people just about
everywhere ready to pounce, it's still hard to catch the jammer.

That's assuming someone is actively looking for jammers.
