The MSF lists a dirtbike school on their web site, but I could not
find any listings for it in Illinois. Well, I called them and there
are private courses offered near by.
Are there any other dirt bike schools offered near Chicago that
anyone would recommend? Seems like a good way to get my feet wet
WRT off road riding. The comments I found when I googled for this
were generally pretty favorable.
thanks,

Hank -
Did you e-mail or call the DBS? I know that we have someone around
there somewhere. I'll make a call tomorrow and see if I can find any
other info.

I called them and they gave me the names of two (and number for one)
private schools that teach the course within a couple hours drive.
I was more wondering if the DBS is the only class for dirt bikes.
If you look at track schools, for example, a lot of different vendors
offer them.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: dirtbike school? |

This isn't exactly *near* Chicago...but, its a great place. I don't think
you'll find anything offering anything even close to what these guys have.
I've been there 3 times, as much for the vacation aspect as for the
motorcycling. Last time I was there, there was a group from the Chicago area
that had driven down. I think they would agree that it was well worth the
drive.

That's probably because we don't have terrain like that anywhere
near Chicago.
But it looks like their instruction is trials oriented, no? Doesn't
seem like that would include basic off roading, or would it?

They definately have a trials background, but they're way into any kind of
off-road riding. If you have any questions, give Charlie a call. He's a
great guy and has been riding dirt bikes forever. He'll be able to taylor
any kind of instruction that you're looking for. You might even cosider
starting out on a trials bike. In some ways I think they're more fun to even
trail ride on than a more traditional machine. Oh and did I mention that the
accomodations are first class? And based on any research that I did before
going...I think they're **way** underpriced for what they provide.

Trials riding is definately a great supplemental riding teacher for
off-road, especially as it makes you acutely familiar with standing
and weighting the bike in different ways to find traction - it's a
great sensitivity trainer. I wish I was as sensitive.
I went riding around one day on my Beta, with Kev and Christian on
their regular bikes (XR400's) and the hardest part was the high-speed
stuff, just trying to keep up with them.
Riding with Wes and Jon and Baxter (and Eric M) on trials bikes, down
into canyons and creeks and back up and stuff isn't really "trials"
riding, but it's extreme, it's a lot of damn exercise, and a lot of
fun in its own right.
Provided you don't overheat and blow a gasket - yours or the bike's.

You should try a trials competition.
There's a couple coming up at Carnegie later
this month and next month.
Competition is easier physically than the practice/play riding we
since you have to stop to walk each section, at least on the first loop.

Hank -
The DBS is designed as an intro to off-road riding for either beginning
riders or riders with street experience who want to try off-road. It's
a pretty basic course.
Having said that, we (in Georgia) are going to be offering an
intermediate school come summer. It's geared toward a rider who has
some experience but wants some help tackling some obstacles typical to
woods riding.
