Hello,
Long time, no hear.
I've since got my precious bike back, but unfortunately am still not game
enough to ride it.
I still wanna get on it and hear it though. But unfortunately the battery is
now flat. I don't know how to clutch start it either (that also includes,
actually riding the bike, which I'm not quite ready for yet.
How can I keep it charged without riding it for the time being?
Cheers

Start it and let it just idle quietly for a few minutes at least once a
week. Since it's flat now, you'll need a jump starter battery pack, wall
charger, or jump start it from a car to get it going, and leave it to run
for a good 20 minutes at least. Note that the battery may be farked from
the accident, so you might need to replace it. If you do replace the
battery, it'll be well charged when you get it, so (a) be careful hooking it
up (bzzt sparky sparky) and (b) you won't need to run the bike for very long
when you start it for the first time.

ditto other reply, also get a smart battery charger, preferably for bike
batteries as car ones can overcook the smaller bike battery.
Dick Smith have a couple of intelligent chargers specifically for
motorcycles.. Plug in and forget.... it works out how much to charge and
what level (trickle, full etc).
I think they are called "Battery Fighter".... silly name... Most bike shops
also stock similar units.
Bikes also like to be ridden Note that idling a bike, with headlights
on, may not even charge the battery unless at a high idle.

I do understand that bikes like to be ridden.
However, I am not in a position at the moment to ride it, and it looks to be
that way for the next few months at least.
I do not know anyone that could even take it for a ride for me. But still
hearing it is still a bonus.
God I love my bike. *Sigh*
cheers

Photoshop a "trickle" charger from supercheap auto or another such place
that sell battery chargers.

Hello Charmayne,
I've had similar problems with motorcycle batteries.
It costs about $10 to have the battery recharged at a shop,
but you can buy a new battery from about $20 depending on
size and type. I'd go for a new battery if I were you.

You could always push start it:
Switch on the ignition and pop it into 2nd gear, and sweet-talk
somebody into pushing you down the road. While they're doing this,
hold in the clutch, when you've picked up some speed let the clutch
out and it should turn over and run. Might need to give it a little
throttle too.
Saves jumping it. Just drive it around for 20 minutes or so without
your lights on and it should be charged up OK.

Get a trickle charger from a bike shop. Make sure its one that can be
left plugged in. (Sometimes called a battery tender) BMW Southbank sell
them for about $60, so supercheap or any reasonable bike shop should
have them cheaper.
The battery charger may tell you the battery is stuffed. Get a new one.
If you're not going to ridr the bike for a bit, you'll need the battery
charger even with a new battery.

Won't work on most bikes, mind you, since they don't generate enough
electrickery at idle to light a fart much less charge the battery.
If you're not going to ride it often, blow $50 at K-mart for a battery
tender.

Which, given it's an aircooled, is more likely to overheat the engine
than charge the battery.

Or, possibly, just top up the cells with distilled water.

Or possibly it will just be sold dry and you'll get to spill acid all
over the place and then charge it. Be sure to ask the guy at the shop
if he's filled and charged it already, and if you don't have a charger
pay him a bit extra to do it for you.
When removing a battery, always undo the negative terminal first.
When replacing a battery, always do up the negative terminal last.
It doesn't matter if you slip and short the negative terminal to the
chassis, and while the negative terminal is off there's no circuit
so it doesn't matter if you slip while doing the positive. But if
you slip and short the positive to the chassis while the negative
is attached, Bad Things Happen.

But you could just photoshop in a radiator, and that'd sort everything out.
