Im looking at a used 07 sportbike. It has a digital odemetor and it reads 390 miles. The seller claims it was a repo. I wonder if there are clues to look for on the bike to tell if the mileage is really true. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, I'd be concerned about the "repo" claim, too, as it gives the seller an
excuse to not have information or proof.

Two cues come to mind:

a)At 390 miles, it should still be the breakin oil. Take a sample and have
it chemically analzyed. Should be something like mineral oil. Should also
be very dark after 390 miles.

b)Tire wear should be virtually non-existent.

c)Tires should be the same model that ships with the bike new.

If you're pretty much the only buyer, you could always use the "Red Herring"
technique to try to get the price down a bit. Claim to have found proof
that the odometer has been tampered with or may not be accurate. You could
claim that the tires have more wear than they should for 390 miles.

In states requiring annual safety inspections, mileage is
usually recorded by the inspection station. These notes
are often used in an odometer tampering dispute.

Unfortunately, unlike an automobile safety sticker, you
can't see the issuer on a bike sticker(because the back
side, where the issuer is identified, contains adhesive
for application to the bike).

But, if you have the sticker requirement in your state,
and you can identify the issuer, this would at least
disclose the mileage at the last inspection.

David's advice on tires is good (check the chain too) but on a year old
sportbike I'd be alot more concerned with overall condition and crash
evidence than mileage. It's hard to hurt a modern engine with stock
electronics (they won't let you) and these drive trains are capable of over
100,000 miles - much more than most riders can put on them.

FFS.

True

True

Another pointer is to look at the wear on things like footpeg rubbers
(if fitted) and grips.

There are a million tiny little clues, but basically, if the bike looks
and feels tight as a drum, then the mileage is probably accurate.

Look at the shifter rubber. If it shows signs of wear, then the millage
obviously isn't right. Not many sellers know or think about the shifter.

Gas Mileage?? - The guys at work and I who rides Motorcycles where talking about gas mileage. If my 1986 Dodge Colt I had that got me 45 miles a gallon on the highway. It had a 1400cc engine and weighs 1700 lbs. Take my 1976 Honda GL1000 has a 1000cc engine and weighs..

KAW KLR250 mileage - What kind of gas mileage should I expect from a 2004 Kawasaki KLR250?

Double the mileage! - I bought my bike in June with 4,866 miles on it. Today, it passed 9,732, so it now has double the mileage that it had when I bought it (the first half took 21 years to accumulate). I don't understand why some people buy bikes and then barely use..
