I posted a while back saying i had trouble with my bike when it got to
normal op temp, saying that when it gets there and either the thermo fan
cuts in or the headlight is on that the stupid things idle will slow and
eventually stall?? well most of you said check your regulator, and i can say
that a sparky at work checked the regulator out and its fine. i reduced the
wattage of my headlight globe ( was 60/65 to a 50/100, figured i`d only need
highbeam when i was moving) and it has helped a bit, but the bike is still
doing the same albeit it take a few more seconds to stall. So, anymore ideas
where i can look?? this is driving me nuts and i`m almost at the point where
i`ll pay for a sparky to come out!! ( i hate paying)

Sounds like you're just not generating enough power or there maybe a short
somewhere in the system.

The alternator may not be generating enough current for the bike, get it's output checked.
The battery could also be dying. If you have a multimeter, check the battery voltage
after a good ride and make sure it's at least 12 volts. Fire the bike up and check the
voltage when giving it a good rev. It should jump to around 14 volts. If it doesn't,
then it's likely the alternator.

so either reg or stator is breaking down when hot

you just have to guess which one

is it a case of its 13 volts and then fan kicks in and volts drop ??<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

It sounds to me like a short somewhere. As it only happens when it gets hot
maybe check the ignition leads/caps for cracks. The insulation may be breaking
down when they get hot and soft. If you have a garage, close all the doors and
windows so it's as dark as possible or do it at night, fill the carbs and remove the
tank and rev it while checking for any arcing from the leads and caps.

My XJ900 used to run like shit every time it rained. If I parked it somewhere dark
enough and looked under the tank, I'd see it arcing across the plug caps from water
going down the leads into the caps. Bit of electrical tape around the outside caps and
it was fine again.

Maybe also check any wiring that runs close to the motor and make sure there's
no melted wires, check all spade and bullet connections to make sure they're secure.
One 250 single I had would start missing and dying (usually mid corner, bastard!), when
hot. It even left me stranded a couple of times. I finally tracked it down to a loose spade
connector on the ignition coil. When cold it had just a tight enough fit to run fine. As soon
as the engine got hot, it heated the coil above it and loosened the spade connector. Squished
it a bit with a pair of pliers so it had a tight connection and it was fine from then on.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
