Hi y'all,
Quick question.... a guy I know has acquired a 89 XV1000. He already has a
CBR600 so he has asked me to keep the XV (ride it, store it, etc) for him.
I did a quick google search but can't find much info on this model except
that it looks a bit like a chopper/cruiser. Any info or links to info would
be appreciated.
Anyone give me a '20word' run down on what it is please?
Thanks...

It's a 1000cc V-Twin made by yamaha. A standard or naked bike, but with
some american custom overtones. It evolved into the XV1100 virago cruiser.

Generally regarded as being a bit of a oddity at the time. Most jap bikes
were in line 4's back then.

They are fairly reliable, except for the starter mechanism's (which also
plagues the bigger viragos as well).

You will probably find little information about it in Oz as they sold few of
them here.

Yep but the original TR1 (non-chopper) XV1000 was a chainy.

Have a look at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.viragotech.com/" target="_blank">http://www.viragotech.com/</a> it as a lot of info and links to
the Virago range. It as a good reliable motor and I dont think the engine
design as changed much.

My wife , Margaret, thinks they are great bikes, she rides a '95 XV1100. I
live in a small town (pop 3600) and we have 6 viragoes in town (the bike
that is not large aggressive women, but then) of different vintages. One of
our members for council rides a 1989 virago he paid $1500(?) for so the
previous owner could pay his traffic offences off.

And the chain is probably as good as new.

An enclosed chaincase with an O-ring chain should last as long as a
shaft! No dirt, no wear.

In my humble opinion.

They didn't have O-ring chains when they were making full sized bikes with
enclosed chain cases though... so you still had to remove the enclosure case
and retension and oil the chain on a semi regular basis (not as often as a
normal chain though).

But they did outlast non-enclosed chains quite
substantially.
An O-ring chain could be retro-fitted - as long as there is enough side
clearances.
